Advocacy Monday: What Is Advocacy? Advocacy can sound like a big word - and sometimes an even bigger responsibility. But it doesn’t have to be. Advocacy is simply using the voice you have, in whatever way you can, to help make sure another family doesn’t have to walk this road alone. For families who have experienced cannabis-related harms, advocacy can look different for each of us. It might be sharing your story. Talking with another parent. Sharing accurate information about cannabis. Educating someone who doesn’t understand the risks. Supporting prevention efforts. Speaking up in your school or community. Contacting a policymaker. Or simply learning more so that when an opportunity comes, you feel prepared. And if your family is still in the middle of addiction, mental health challenges, grief, or recovery, there is no pressure to advocate before you’re ready. Sometimes you need to take care of yourself and your family first. That matters too. But when the time feels right, what you’ve lived through can become incredibly powerful. Your experience may help another parent recognize a warning sign sooner, ask a different question, feel less alone, or understand that cannabis is not harmless for everyone. You don’t have to be an expert to advocate. You don’t need a title. And you don’t need to have all the answers. You can simply start with what you know, what you’ve experienced, and a desire to help. Cannabis exposure is an increasingly overlooked danger for pets as marijuana products become more accessible, commercially available, and highly potent. According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, more than 6,200 marijuana toxicity cases involving pets were reported in 2021, increasing to over 6,300 cases by 2024. While most exposures are not fatal, one study documented 16 cannabis-related pet deaths, many involving marijuana edibles. 🐾 Dogs are especially vulnerable, often ingesting edibles or cannabis products left within reach. Because pets are far more sensitive to THC than humans, even small amounts can lead to serious symptoms, including disorientation, vomiting, loss of coordination, tremors, seizures, and, in severe cases, coma. He's talking about cannabis, and he's right. This is the part of use I don't talk about enough; THC kills motivation, it puts up a smoked-glass window between users and the world. (Yes, heavy alcohol use does too, but alcoholics can't hide the cost from themselves because alcohol is physically punishing in a way cannabis is not. THC addicts just slowly, inexorably fall behind.)
