This is a result of: Not having family around. Not having friends. Choosing to live an isolated life. Let’s be honest: this is not our culture. Marriage is a cultural practice, and therefore, it deserves a cultural ceremony. You cannot celebrate marriage without family and friends and still expect it to feel like a marriage celebration. Let’s not copy everything from other cultures and blindly paste it into our own setup. Those weddings attended by 10 people may work in societies where someone gives birth to one child and an entire generation of 20 years has only five members. In Africa, it’s different. We are a communal people. We have families, friends, relatives, neighbours and communities. A wedding should reflect that.

Why transport live cattle from Mbarara to Kampala and subject them to unnecessary stress! Instead, establish a regional abattoir in Mbarara so the animals can be slaughtered locally. Deliver only the processed meat to Kampala, leave the dung behind in the villages (where it can be used productively), and create local jobs in the process.

I have seen videos circulating, accusing a doctor at People’s Hospital of having “killed a mother.” First, let’s be careful with such allegations. Doctors do not go to work intending to kill patients. Doctors are trained and committed to saving lives and improving the health of their patients. The reality, however, is that doctors deal with human lives, and medicine does not always have the outcome we hope for. A patient can receive appropriate treatment and still deteriorate or die because of the severity of their illness, complications, or circumstances beyond the doctor’s control. Just as a farmer can plant crops and some may fail to germinate, or a tailor can make a garment that later gets torn, doctors can provide the best possible care and still experience an unfortunate outcome. The difference is that in medicine, the outcome involves a human life. When that life is lost, there is genuine grief, pain and a grieving family that deserves compassion and answers. But an unfortunate medical outcome should not automatically translate into an accusation of murder. Where there are concerns about negligence or misconduct, let the facts, medical records and proper investigations establish what happened. Doctors are not murderers. They are human beings entrusted with one of the greatest responsibilities: caring for human life.
