My increasingly strong opinion is that compute is the biggest moat in AI. Scientific breakthroughs don’t stay secret for long. Papers get published, researchers move, ideas leak, open source catches up. Give it enough time and almost everyone has access to roughly the same

fun thing: - if moonshot lets others serve K3 at lower price, would drive adoption but limit moonshot-delivered inferene - if moonshot sets minimums at its list prices, then inference providers are at an inherent price disadvantage (as they must share a cut?) unless their cost of service is THAT much lower
This pricing being *not* cheaper than Kimi's official API could also be because: 1) These 3rd party inference clouds have to pay Moonshot per the new Kimi K3 license, thus their margins are thinner than before 2) The competitive dynamic is not focused on price but on physical

Here is how I see the Kimi K3 license works in real life: - Clause 2, the Model as a Service clause, is intended for all the cloud platforms essentially reselling K3 to their customers. This includes hyperscalers (AWS, GCP), to neoclouds (Nebius, CoreWeave), to inference platforms (Fireworks, Together, baseten). The $20 million trailing 12 months revenue threshold is comically low. Everyone meets it and will have to negotiate a commercial, revenue-sharing contract with Kimi. All the ones that have offered Zero 0 support today already did. - Clause 3, what I called the Branding clause, is less about revenue generation, more about aura farming. For example, if say AT&T (who does a lot of open source AI work btw) wants to use Kimi 3 to power its customer service agent, if if they makes tweaks and fine-tuned, it will have to show "powered by Kimi 3" or something along that line to deploy this service. AT&T is obviously big enough to pass the user base and revenue threshold. Customer service is also a commercial in nature. But AT&T does not need to pay Moonshot a dime.
Kimi K3 license. It's inspired by MIT but distinctly non-commercial, where any company making over $20M/yr must get a specific commercial deal (and display Kimi K3 if over 100M users or $20M/mo revenue)

For the first time in several quarters, @generalcatalyst in Q2 overtook @ycombinator when it came to participating in the most fintech deals of $5M or more, per @Crunchbase data. Notably, the quarter also marked the busiest one for General Catalyst since 2021 in terms of investing in rounds of $5 million or above. The firm’s next-busiest fintech investing quarter in rounds of that size was the fourth quarter of 2025, when it participated in 10 raises of $5 million or above.
