And what is womanhood, then? Trans Person: I would describe womanhood as a very subjective concept. Michael Knowles: But you just said we're talking about things that are concrete. Michael Knowles: But that's a circular definition. I'm not asking you to describe anything. I'm asking if you can offer a definition. Because it gets to the heart of your identity. You're four years old and say, "I don't really feel like a man." How would you even know what that means? And how would you know what it means now to feel like a woman? Trans Person: Because there are a variety of traditions associated with the male and female sex, and I've decided that I'd rather subscribe to the ones associated with the female sex. Michael Knowles: But how would you even know what that is? They point to traditional gender roles. Trans Person: I understand what a traditional gender role is. I'm not comfortable with these social expectations, therefore I'm going to adhere to different social expectations generally associated with the opposite sex. Michael Knowles: But that's not what you're saying. Previously, you said there are social expectations associated with being a woman, and you wanted to avoid them so much that you no longer call yourself a woman. Not that a woman can avoid those expectations but that those expectations are so intrinsic to womanhood that you say: "I will no longer be a woman. I will be non-binary." That's what you said earlier.

Estamos hablando de una escuela pública, no selectiva y situada en un entorno socialmente desfavorecido. ✅Lo extraordinario no es simplemente que sus alumnos obtengan buenas notas. Es que lo llevan haciendo de forma sostenida durante años. Michaela obtiene resultados académicos muy por encima de la media inglesa, especialmente en las calificaciones más altas. ✅¿Qué hace diferente a Michaela? Hay una cultura escolar muy coherente basada en: • expectativas altas
• disciplina
• rutinas
• conocimiento
• práctica
• esfuerzo
• autoridad docente
• responsabilidad del alumno ✅Su planteamiento parte de una idea clara: un alumno desfavorecido no necesita que rebajemos nuestras expectativas sobre él. Necesita que le proporcionemos más oportunidades para alcanzarlas. ✅En Michaela el comportamiento se enseña. Cómo entrar en clase.

Cómo responder.
Cómo desplazarse.
Cómo trabajar. Las rutinas no se dejan al azar. Porque aprender también requiere un entorno que permita aprender. ✅Y hay otro elemento especialmente interesante: el conocimiento importa. Michaela no considera que enseñar contenidos sea algo anticuado. Al contrario. Para pensar críticamente, argumentar, comprender el mundo o resolver problemas necesitas disponer de conocimientos sobre los que pensar. ✅También concede enorme importancia a la práctica y a la memoria. No porque memorizar sea el objetivo final de la educación.Sino porque la memoria es una herramienta para poder pensar mejor. ✅El profesor tampoco desaparece detrás de metodologías. Explica.

Vuelve a explicar. ✅Por todo ello, hay algo que resulta difícil ignorar: una escuela pública, con alumnado socialmente desfavorecido, puede alcanzar resultados académicos extraordinarios sin rebajar el nivel de exigencia. ✅El debate interesante no es (como quieren hacernos creer los que solo quieren hacer apología) si "¿Michaela es progresista o conservadora?" Para los docentes que no están enfermos de ideología la pregunta es: ¿Qué elementos de su cultura escolar funcionan y cuáles podemos trasladar a otros contextos? ✅Porque copiar Michaela no significa copiar sus uniformes, sus sanciones o sus filas. Significa preguntarnos si nuestras escuelas tienen: rutinas claras + conocimiento + buenos hábitos + enseñanza explícita + expectativas altas + cultura del esfuerzo. ✅Y aquí aparece una cuestión especialmente importante para la educación inclusiva: inclusión no debería significar bajar las expectativas. Al contrario. La inclusión debería significar proporcionar los apoyos necesarios para que cada alumno pueda alcanzar expectativas ambiciosas. ✅Quizá esa sea la lección más incómoda de Michaela: la pobreza no puede convertirse en una excusa para ofrecer una educación más pobre.
