There is a clear position to be found on the situation in Spain — and the phenomenon of periphery-to-core migration more broadly. It is neither the right’s “migrant invasion” discourse nor the bleeding-heart liberals’ insistence on “unlimited open borders”; they both misidentify the culprit and obscure the solution. Migration does not occur in a vacuum. It is driven, first of all, by the various instruments and by-products of imperialist exploitation: wage deflation, land grabs, sanctions, wars of aggression, environmental devastation, and so on. When a million Syrians came to Europe, it was not because they were seeking to steal European jobs, but because their country was facing a full-blown economic and military terror campaign underwritten by Washington and NATO. This form of involuntary migration represents a dual crime. First, the skilled workers — the doctors, nurses, engineers, and so on — are fully absorbed into Western labor markets. They are often well rewarded. This drives a “brain drain” that deprives nations stunted by the legacies of colonialism of the cadre necessary to develop. Second, the working poor are instrumentalized to settle conflicts between factions of the imperialist ruling class. The situation in Morocco is an extreme case of the latter: a people first made destitute by imperialism, and then hurled by it at an intransigent “ally” to punish it for not showing enough love for the permanent war. These tendencies are intrinsic to imperialism, and they cannot be resolved within it. We are already in a situation where “migrants” from “the jungle” are gunned down at the borders of “the garden” — or consigned to concentration camps and slave markets just beyond it — and the chaos becomes a pretext for the further militarization of our societies. We cannot advance towards a “humane migration policy” without solving the more fundamental problem. But there is a clear alternative. Socialist states — from the Eastern Bloc to China to Cuba — have had precisely the opposite effect. First, they trained cadres that then returned to their countries of origin as doctors, teachers, engineers, or architects, helping undo the effects of the imperialist brain drain. Second, they supported the peaceful development of the global periphery to enable its working people to remain within their borders. This is why the question of migrant rights cannot be abstracted from the struggle against imperialism and, at the end of the day, cannot be definitively resolved outside the struggle for socialism.

All those who do not live in Iran, and all those who do not have a specialization about the intricacies of Iranian political system, or its history; should have the decency of keeping their mouth shut at this point in time. People with ZERO experience in political mobilization, who never ever carried a weapon in their hands, or lived under death falling from the sky; and even some people who would have ZERO media space without AoR direct generosity and uplifting; are pontificating in ways that are humiliating and degrading to the greatest warriors and political leaders this century. Go lead a revolution in your country, if you believe you know how to do it better; or shut up and listen.

There's a lot of gnashing of teeth from Iranian nationalists and their partisans that Iran was "fooled again" or that the remaining leaders are too libbed out since the based ones all got taken out. I agree, obviously the US was not sincere in offering that ceasefire. But quite honestly, "getting fooled" or playing along with it in the moment was not a bad play for Iran. First of all, Trump was in a very dangerous and volatile moment. After the "Civilization ending" post he needed a way to climb down from such a dramatic moment. The ceasefire provided that. Of course, just hours later really, it fell apart because there's obviously no real agreement. But we are no longer in the dangerously heightened mood we were in just 24 hours ago. Importantly, the Iranians have not done anything irreversible. They haven't given up their uranium, or given up any missiles. They even still have Hormuz sewn up tight. Everything is more chaotic, but there hasn't been too much change of consequence. I don't think Iran is in a spectacularly worse position than before. However, if they can throw Rouhani, Pezeshkian, Zarif and friends into a bunker with no telecommunication to chill out for the rest of the war, that might just help out a lot with Iran's bid to keep its sovreignty.
