Current Shelter Crisis Overview Widespread Displacement: As of mid-2025, there are over 760,000 IDPs in Tigray living in precarious, overcrowded conditions. Many families who were previously in rental housing within host communities have been forced into collective centers because they can no longer afford rent. Infrastructure Strain: A significant number of IDPs are sheltered in schools—92 schools across the region continue to be used as collective centers, which severely disrupts local education and strains the relationship between host communities and displaced families. Vulnerability to Weather: Makeshift tents and aging collective centers offer little protection against heavy rains and strong winds. Past storms have demonstrated the destructive potential of these conditions, with reports of tents being destroyed, flooding in living areas, and damage to essential service facilities like clinics. Humanitarian Challenges Limited Resources: Shelter capacity remains critically low. While some initiatives have helped relocate IDPs from schools, the vast majority remain in unsuitable, cramped environments characterized by a lack of privacy, poor sanitation, and the spread of illness. Barriers to Return: Despite the ceasefire, many displaced families are unable to return home due to ongoing instability, loss of property, and security concerns. For many, the camps have become long-term, unsustainable residences rather than temporary stops. Climate Risks: The region is increasingly affected by intense weather patterns. Dear @StateDept The people of Tigray are not asking for U.S. visas. For more than four years, they have been calling for the return of IDPs, the restoration of peace, and the right to return home. Western Tigray is Tigray. If displaced Tigrayans are allowed to return to their homes in Western Tigray, including those who fled to Sudan and other areas, what reason would there be for another war in northern Ethiopia? The real issue is not visas. The real issue is that thousands of Tigrayans remain displaced and unable to return to their land.
