Finance is moving onchain faster than ever. But is the world moving with it? In August alone, the @base ecosystem saw a remarkable wave of new products across tokenized stocks, stablecoins, lending, payments, AI agents, remittances and real-world assets. Stocks can trade 24/7. AI agents can pay for APIs and services autonomously. Money can cross borders in seconds. Onchain lending is reaching billions of dollars. This is real progress. But there is another side to the story. Around 2.2 billion people are still offline. Around 1.3 billion adults still don't have a financial account. And billions more may technically have access to the internet or financial services, but affordability, devices, infrastructure and income still determine whether that access is actually useful. So we are reaching an interesting moment: We are building financial infrastructure sophisticated enough for autonomous AI agents while billions of humans are still trying to gain meaningful access to the digital economy. I don't see this as an argument against what is being built. Quite the opposite. It may be the next great opportunity for this ecosystem. Base already has many of the pieces: cheap global payments, stablecoins, open markets, builders, consumer applications and increasingly powerful infrastructure. Perhaps the next challenge is not only bringing more assets onchain. It is finding ways to make this new economy useful to people who have historically been excluded from the old one. That won't be solved by Base alone. It will require builders who understand different countries, cultures, incomes and everyday problems. And I believe some of those solutions will be built on Base. Something bigger than another crypto cycle is starting to take shape. Tokenized stocks are moving onchain. Perpetual markets are expanding beyond crypto. Stablecoins are becoming settlement infrastructure. AI agents can research, pay for data, manage capital and increasingly execute transactions themselves. These developments look separate when you watch them one by one. I don't think they are. What is being built looks less like a crypto market and more like a new financial operating layer. Humans will use it. Businesses will use it. Eventually machines will use it too. And machines are different customers. They don't sleep, don't care about banking hours, don't want subscriptions, and can't wait days for settlement. They need markets that are always open, money that is programmable, and payments that can happen almost instantly. That makes the combination of Base, stablecoins, x402, tokenized assets and AI agents much more interesting than any one of those technologies on its own. The real transition may happen when people stop thinking about “using crypto” altogether. They will trade an asset, pay for a service, monetize something they created, ask an agent to complete a task, or move value across the world. The blockchain underneath will simply be infrastructure. We spent years asking when crypto would reach mass adoption. Maybe that's the wrong question now. The more interesting question is: What happens when the next billion users aren't all human?

Something interesting is happening onchain. We spent years putting money and assets onchain. Now identity, reputation, content and autonomous agents are starting to move there too. The interesting part isn't that everything can become a token. It's that almost anything can become an economic object. A post can have a market. An idea can have provenance. An agent can have a wallet. Software can pay software. Reputation can move between systems. At some point, the lines between content, software and capital start to blur. The US Constitution was the most important political innovation ever, but it's missing two important things: 1) A cap on the growth of government spending 2) A requirement for hard-backed currency Without them, every democracy drifts toward more debt and eventual loss of reserve currency status (see The Changing World Order). The US is $39T in debt, and adding $1T roughly every 100 days, with interest payments now exceeding the defense budget. There is no mechanism to stop it. Politicians get elected by promising free stuff using other people's money. Some voters get a benefit today, while the negative impact of the spending goes to future generations who can't vote yet. The incentive structure is broken. What fixes it? A new constitution somewhere on the frontier (Mars, special economic zones, cyberspace), an amendment that aligns incentives in the current system (politically challenging), or hyper economic growth (AI + robotics + crypto) to outpace inflation.
