Westminster Council is threatening to shut down a soup kitchen at Charing Cross that's fed vulnerable people for a decade. Their objection? It attracts "crowds of vulnerable people." They've hit volunteers with a £500 parking charge for the van that brings the food. Demanded a waste-disposal licence. Turned up repeatedly with police and security officers to complain. This is the same council that floated restricting "vertical drinking" (standing with a pint in Soho) to protect the area’s "character." So yes: they care about neighbourhood character. Just not when the people who need help are too visible. The soup kitchen feeds people with nothing. Westminster Council would rather it happened somewhere else, presumably, without crowds of "vulnerable people." By the same logic, they'll be closing hospitals next - all those tediously sick people, cluttering up the character of the neighbourhood...

Starbucks paid zero tax in 2025 on sales of £556.3m. They got a £13.7m tax credit instead. What's the benefit of having Starbucks in the UK? Either tax them on their sales or give the sites to independent British cafes instead. Stop letting foreign multinationals plunder our country.

THE GRAVE CLEANER Julian Wilson ran the post office in Astwood Bank, Worcestershire, with his wife Karen from 2001 to 2008. He bought the business for £125,000. He kept meticulous records and reported every glitch the moment he spotted it. That kind of diligence usually gets you a pat on the back. Here it got him a criminal record. @PostOffice's Horizon system, showed a shortfall of over £27,000 that never actually existed. His lawyer told him plead guilty or risk prison. He pleaded guilty in 2008 to false accounting. His sentence was 300 hours of community service. Part of that service was cleaning graves. A man who rang the Horizon helpdesk to report a fault ended up scrubbing headstones as punishment for a bug he didn't create. The Post Office slapped the couple with a confiscation order and froze their assets. They were forced to sell the business at a fraction of what it was worth. Karen sold her jewellery, including her engagement ring, to help cover the costs. Julian could never get another job with a false accounting conviction hanging over him. He spent the rest of his life trying to clear his name and became one of the founding members of the Justice for Subpostmasters Alliance. He never got to see it succeed. Julian died of bowel cancer in 2016. His conviction was finally quashed in 2021, 5 years after he was already gone. Karen Wilson told the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry @PostOffInquiry that the investigation and his illness broke him in the end. Paula Vennells ran the Post Office from 2012 to 2019 while it kept insisting the software was fine. She has since said she is truly sorry for the devastation caused. An apology does not clean a grave. It does not un-convict a dead man either. More than 700 sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted between 1999 and 2015 in what is now formally recognised as the biggest miscarriage of justice in British legal history. If your MP is Reform or Tory, tag them and ask one simple question... which school did you go to and who paid for it? Then ask why that never counts as unfair advantage.
