The Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help: . This icon of the Theotokos, or Mother of God, is written (painted) on wood. Although the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, in the upper left and right of the icon, hold the instruments of the Passion, the golden background color bespeaks Resurrection. The Child Jesus, having looked ahead to His Passion, runs to His Mother's comforting arms, almost losing His sandal on the way. It dangles from his foot, falling off. He knows even now, that Mary will be His comfort during His Passion. Mary holds His precious hands, protecting Him for now, but she also holds Him extended from her body, her gift to us. Both are crowned, and the crowns indicate the final triumph of Jesus and Mary. Here we can see, in a simple picture, the truth of Jesus as both true God and true man, wanting human comfort from His Mother, yet King of all that is. And we are invited to come also to Our Mother of Perpetual Help in every need and experience in life, for she is surely our loving Mother also.

Steadfastness in Suffering 1. We are all obliged to suffer in soul and body. Suffering begins at birth and ends at death. "The whole life of a Christian is a cross," (Sermon 31) says St. Augustine. For this reason we have to develop the virtue of patience. “Let patience have its perfect work,” says St. James, “that you may be perfect and entire.” (James 1:4) If we are to be perfect, we must accept sufferings and trials from the hands of God and offer them to Him in a spirit of harmony with His holy will. In this way all our actions become valuable, for they are acts of reparation and of love which will be rewarded in Heaven. Both our joys and our sorrows are sanctified if we offer them to God, Who arranges everything for our own good. The Saints longed to suffer because they loved God and knew that suffering is the only true way in which we can prove our love. Suffering is the best medicine for the soul, for when it is endured with patience it purifies us and prepares us for Heaven. "If God does not punish you for your sins," says St. Augustine, "it is a sign that you are no longer counted among His sons." (Lib. de Pass., c. 5.) “Whom the Lord loves, he chastises,” St. Paul writes, “and he scourges every son whom he receives.” (Heb. 12:6) Suffering is in fact a gift from God. It reminds us that we have not been created for this world, but for Heaven, in preparation for which we must carry our cross with patience in the footsteps of Jesus. No matter what we do, we must suffer. Either we bear trials patiently and gain an increase of merit, or we rebel against them and gain no merit at all. When we suffer, let us think of the two thieves, both of whom were tortured in the same way. But the good thief accepted his torments with patience in reparation for his sins and was saved, while the bad thief rebelled against his sufferings and was most probably damned forever. 2. When we feel depressed, or when we are tempted to strike out angrily against human injustice and misunderstanding, there are two considerations which should help us to be patient. (1) The first is the reflection that everything comes to us from God or is at least permitted by Him. Why should we rebel against the will of God? Jesus was innocence itself, yet He willed to suffer for love of us. Are we unwilling to suffer for love of Him? (2) The second is the realisation that we are sinners who have offended God many times and deserve to be punished. It is necessary to accept patiently all the sufferings which God sends us in expiation of our sins. “We are receiving what our deeds deserved.” (Luke 23:41) Above all, we ought to resolve never to give way to anger in word or in deed when we are offended. On these occasions we should wait until we have calmed down and have asked God for peace of mind. Before we do anything we need time for reflection and prayer. If we act in this way we shall not have to be sorry afterwards. Prayer to Our Lady of Perpetual Help for the Conversion of a Sinner. . O Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help, thou knowest so well the great value of an immortal soul. Thou knowest what it means, that every soul has been redeemed by the Blood of thy Divine Son; thou wilt not then despise my prayer, if I ask from thee the conversion of a sinner, nay, a great sinner, who is rapidly hurrying on towards eternal ruin. Thou, O good merciful Mother, knowest well his/her irregular life. Remember that thou art the Refuge of sinners, remember that God has given thee power to bring about the conversion of even the most wretched sinners. All that has been done for his/her soul has been unsuccessful; if thou dost not come to his/her assistance, he/she will go from bad to worse. Obtain for him/her an effectual grace that he/she may be moved and brought back to God and his/her duties. Send him/her, if necessary, temporal calamities and trials, that he/she may enter into himself/herself, and put an end to his/her sinful course. Thou, O most merciful Mother, hast converted so many sinners at the intercession of their friends. Be, then also moved by my prayer, and bring this unhappy soul to true conversion of heart. O Mother of Perpetual Help, show that thou art the Advocate and Refuge of sinners. So I hope, so may it be. Amen.

Saint Vincenza Gerosa was born Caterina Gerosa on 29 October 1784 in the small town of Lovere, in northern Italy. She came from a modest but stable family, yet early losses marked her life. Orphaned in her youth after the deaths of her parents and one sister, she faced hardship but responded with quiet resilience and growing devotion to faith. Rather than seeking comfort in worldly pursuits, she turned her attention to the needs of those around her, particularly the poor and the sick in her community. In 1824, Caterina met a younger woman named Bartolomea Capitanio, who shared her deep sense of calling. Together they founded the Sisters of Charity of Lovere, a religious congregation dedicated to educating children, caring for the ill, and serving the marginalized. They took religious vows and committed themselves fully to this work. Caterina chose the name Vincenza upon entering religious life. When Bartolomea died young in 1833, Vincenza assumed leadership of the fledgling order. Under her guidance, the congregation expanded its reach, establishing new houses and deepening its mission of practical charity rooted in prayer and humility. Vincenza lived simply, avoiding attention and preferring to work unseen. She suffered from poor health in her later years but continued to guide the sisters until her death on 29 June 1847 at the age of sixty-two. Her legacy endured through the order she helped establish, which spread beyond Italy and continues today under names such as the Sisters of Charity of Lovere or Sisters of Maria Bambina. The Church recognized her holiness through a formal process. She was beatified in 1926 and canonized in 1950 by Pope Pius XII alongside her co-foundress. Her feast day is observed on 28 June. Saint Vincenza Gerosa remains an example of steadfast service, showing how ordinary acts of compassion, sustained by faith, can build institutions of lasting good.
