Worth adding the piece that actually explains why cyclospora got this bad, since the egg recall is really a footnote to a bigger pattern. The CDC's cyclospora response team went from eleven staff to three. The scientist who used to run it resigned over the cuts and said the loss of specialized staff is directly hampering the outbreak response. Around the same time, the CDC quietly made cyclospora monitoring optional instead of mandatory. The screwworm outbreak in Texas cattle also follows DOGE cuts to USAID funded monitoring in Central America, though it's fair to say fact checkers haven't nailed down a direct causal line there the way they have with the cyclospora staffing. Salmonella in eggs might just be ordinary bad luck. But it's landing on an agency that's already down to three people for the outbreak already in progress.
