It is not my purpose, in this intervention, to make an account of the historical evolution of the term Democracy, from its conceptualization in ancient Greece as the "power of the people" — even though the enslaved majority at the time counted for nothing. Nor do I intend to philosophize on the validity and usefulness of so-called representative democracy, which, as is more than well known, has invariably resulted in the concentration of political power in the class that holds the economic and financial hegemony of each nation — where the majorities likewise do not count, and when they do make themselves heard, as is happening at this very moment in many countries, they are brutally repressed and silenced with the complicity of the great press in their service, itself also transnationalized. The best argument is the one offered to us by North American democracy, which seeks to impose itself as a model upon the entire world, in which the Democratic and Republican parties alternate in power, defending — without major differences — the interests of the same great capital, to which both are subordinated."
