I spent a long time looping S1&S2 soundtracks long before TVL aired, so I’ve always loved to analyze the shifts in character dynamics through music,esp. in TVL, music is basically a narrator of its own.there are two moments that hit me especially hard. First is the scene where Lestat, Louis, and Daniel taste the blood of Lestat's descendant. When that girl walks in, a piano variation of "The Drum Was My Heart" starts playing. And this might be the gentlest this theme has ever sounded across all three seasons. It's like something unbearably soft just stirs beneath Lestat's chest. For the longest time, I just assumed "The Drum Was My Heart" was Louis's turning theme,I was SO sure I never even bothered to fact-check. I mean, its first major appearance is in S1 during Louis's turning and wedding, right alongside his narration. It made sense. But the way and timing it used in S3 started to confusing me. The timing always felt slightly misaligned from what I thought the narrator's perspective was(EP3&EP4). So I went down to dig through every DH interview, and finally, in a Reddit AMA from two years ago, I got my answer: DH intended this piece as Lestat's personal theme from the very beginning (see P2 for his reply). That's why it shows up in Lestat's solo moments, whenever his emotions hit a breaking point-because it's actually his theme melody!（of course, we're all free to interpret the scene however we want) It only felt like Louis's theme to me because almost every time it appeared in S1 and S2, their emotions were completely tangled up together, and we were seeing everything through Louis's memory. When it first appeared in S1, it was this massive orchestral arrangement-every single note hits very hard, pounding with this overwhelming sense of intrusion. Because in Louis's perspective, he didn't see Lestat's blood as a gift at first,so beyond the sheer pressure, the theme carried this deep, bitter resentment. Then we get to the S3EP6 scene,it's a completely different thing. it turns into a tender piano ballad. This color never existed in the first two seasons. The contrast with its debut couldn't be more extreme. And that contrast tells you everything about where these two are now compared to S1. Lestat is drowning in self-hatred at this point. He genuinely believes his blood is a curse, brings nothing but ruin to everyone he love's and he still can't believe Louis actually loves him. Meanwhile, Louis is long past that,he knows it is a gift now. He may have even spent considerable time tracking down Lestat's bloodline. just look at that mesmerized expression on his face-He loves this man and obsessed with his blood, he sees it as an honor. And in this moment, the theme isn't about sorrow or dominance anymore. It's stripped down to something warm, romantic, even peaceful. In both scenes, the drum is their heartbeats. But the first drumbeat was heavy with grief and pain,and this one strikes their heartstrings again, it feels like a new beginning, a new possibility,and a second chance. God, I really cannot write short posts🤦🏻‍♀️
