“The previous boards in Nottingham knew what was going on”. Donna Ockenden, a senior midwife examined 2,500 cases which involved mothers and babies often facing “tragic outcomes” while under the care of Nottingham university hospitals.
The report is out now, and the number is worse than expected. 162 deaths, 156 of them children and six mothers, judged avoidable with better care, out of more than 500 cases of death or harm across 2,500 families over twenty years. What stands out is what the report says happened to the women who survived. Women frequently reported invasive procedures were forced upon them or performed entirely without their knowledge or consent, including being pressured into interventions they had explicitly said no to in writing.

Today’s Ockenden report starkly describes what went wrong at NUH but offers no analysis of the why. Until we understand why maternity care in the UK is deteriorating steadily, we will never be able to fix it. The four root causes of failure are: -the dilution of midwifery training, regulation, and statutory supervision over the last 30 years which means a new generation of midwives is not at the right level of competence to take on the lead role in maternity care. -the wholesale adoption of industrial business models (lean management) as a cost saving measure where pregnant women are treated as widgets on a factory production line. -the adoption of natural childbirth ideology as a cost saving measure which denies the fact that childbearing is inherently dangerous. - the unaccountable power of midwife regulatory bodies and unions. This is why we need a judge-led statutory public inquiry to expose what is really going wrong.

@LBC When Ewas waters broke at 36 weeks we waited hours to see a Dr in triage. The next time we saw a Dr was 36 hrs later. We saw multiple midwives, incl. calling triage with concerns. The next time we say a Dr was to confirm Aubrey was dead. That night we got to see two.
