A Girlguiding volunteer of almost 10 years has given an interview to The i about why she is resigning over the organisation’s return to being single-sex. It’s actually quite a sad read. Amy Best-Rokins says Girlguiding was hugely important to her growing up and clearly remains an important part of her life. But there’s a striking contradiction at the heart of her argument. She repeatedly explains why girls need girls-only spaces - saying girls need somewhere they can “be themselves and have their voices heard”, and describing how they become quieter when boys are around. Yet she is leaving because boys and men who identify as girls and women can no longer be members or leaders. Some of her comments also raise questions about boundaries. She talks about Guides confiding in her about being “queer” and suggests the new policy sends the message that there is a “wrong” way to be a girl. Parents need to be able to trust that volunteers in a girls’ organisation will not give their children confusing messages about sex - including the idea that boys can become girls simply by saying they are. Not mentioned in the article is that Amy is an active member of GATE, which campaigns against Girlguiding’s decision to exclude males who identify as female. On balance, I think it’s better that volunteers who cannot accept Girlguiding being genuinely single-sex choose to leave. But how sad that young women are walking away from an organisation that has meant so much to them because they have been convinced that human beings can change sex. Link below (behind Paywall)👇
