We've seen Alanah Pearce' comment about Sony putting out a gagging order on its employees. And it is very telling for what is going on! First, we can say that it checks out with what we have heard from behind the scenes. Initially there were a lot of discussions about Sony's attack on physical media. Then, several days after the announcement the chats just went quiet over night. Nobody even reacted to the topic or things remotely connected to it anymore. Like they were all struck by a giant censorship hammer. In our opinion, this clearly shows several things. One, Sony desperately wants to control the narrative. They anticipated the backlash. They fear the backlash. Subsequently, two, this proves that they don't have a leg to stand on. Their justification for the move to kill physical media and push everyone into an all-digital dystopia is not based on reality. The reason they gave is bogus. We already talked about this before when we looked at the numbers and explained that the bigger picture is much more than "consumer trends". But the most important thing is, three, that they know killing physical media will literally hurt everyone in and around the games industry in some way. EVERBODY has a good reason to be angry and concerned. Retailers have already spoken up. Developers have already spoken up (not only because the backlash harms their marketing, but because it harms motivation, discoverability and an additional stream of revenue), preservationists have spoken up, media has spoken up, gamers have spoken up. The only thing that carries Sony is a large part of the audience that hasn't gotten the message yet. But more and more do. Once a critical mass of casual gamers understand that Sony will exploit them even more for profit in the future, that this decision will come with severe downsides even for those who didn't care before, it can turn the tide. This message control wouldn't be necessary, if their decision would be for the better. In that case, they could easily justify it in public. But they do the opposite. That's all you need to know to continue the backlash and make as many people as you can aware of the consequences.

Download the offline installer of any of your games on GOG, save it to a disc and it's yours forever. You don't need a storefront's permission to play what you bought.

Folks claim physical is useless because "look at The Crew". No shit. For the millionth time: We want a full game build in a proper state at the very least, preserved on disc/card. Independently usable. We object any online dependencies. We care for properties beyond tangibility.

Harsh reminder: Shuhei Yoshida, the previous Head of Playstation, cared a lot about the customer. He was the one who made sure the PS4 had physical shareable discs that you could lend to friends or buy/sell used. Then one day, the then President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan kicked Shuhei Yoshida out of the position of Head of PlayStation in 2019 because Yoshida disagreed with his direction for the company. In hindsight, Jim Ryan’s “direction” became Playstation’s obsession with live service. Yoshida presumably told Ryan that it was a bad idea, and turns out, it was. With Shuhei Yoshida gone, Hermen Hulst took his place. After that, Playstation changed - the gutting of Sony Japan Studios in 2021, censorship of Japanese games ramped up, the live service, and the increase in consumer-hostile decisions such as PSN+ price hikes, removing games and movies from your library… And now the decision to abandon physical discs by 2028. When you look back at what made Playstation start to rot, it always started when Sony Interactive Entertainment moved its operations to California…and having leadership who want to do everything in their power to get rid of what made Playstation special. You will never get another Shadow of the Colossus, another Bloodborne or a Gravity Rush - and you have people like Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst to thank for it.

Sony is really making a clown of itself here. In all seriousness, knowing the internet, we understand why the social media team is avoiding the whole situation outright. But if this company truly cares about its customers, it would address their concerns. Guys… what are we doing?!

The Sony backlash has transcended the borders of gaming. Comedians, fast food chains, tech companies, everyone is piling on Sony. Everyone can feel that something bad has happened. It is by far the most intense criticism we have ever witnessed against a gaming platform.

We also heard that this is by no means just a few angry Twitter accounts. It is massive. It is global. And it isn't just the public either. Sony is getting it from all angles! Almost everyone was surprised by the sudden announcement and people don't take too kindly to it.
