Being an artist who's slowly learning to code, I understand how writing may be the most ignored department in game development. At a glance, anyone can write. You don't need to study mountains of textbooks to do it. You just type. Hand the job to some dork who reads a lot, we can fix it in post. This seems pragmatic but the chasm between good & bad writing is as wide as Tony Hawk executing quadruple rotating backflips and a high schooler doing his first ollie in a parking lot. Unlike the other departments, game writers have no experts in place to assure quality like an art director, lead programmer, level designer, or composer. They work and rework until the bosses say "it's good," whatever that means. And so, imbecile businesspeople tell the writers what to write. These soulless, talentless, number-crunching amateur golf players are as unfit to regonize good writing as they are at telling whether a mesh is ready for rigging, or how to fix bugs. So what, they say. The rest of the game looks fine. But today we see how bad writing ruins multi-million dollar projects. Players don't always notice when it's good, but they do notice when it's bad. Writing isn't a low-level job to simply hand to some rando intern and her coke-addicted boss. It's the beating heart of a game, movie, comic, etc. All the other body parts may be in place but without blood, none of the other departments will receive oxygen.
