I’m not an expert in $PYPL, but I enjoy debating. Yes, I tried to make the original post attention-grabbing and exaggerated a bit for effect. But even taking the jokes aside, I’m still not convinced about the PayPal story. When I said Stripe was “destroying” PayPal, I meant Stripe is rapidly taking market share. We don’t have a perfect 1:1 comparison, but what we do know is this: Stripe processed $1.4T in TPV in 2024, up 38% year over year. PayPal processed $1.68T. That doesn’t really look like a 45% vs 17% market share gap. The merchant account gap is misleading. $PYPL counts tens of millions of small sellers, including people who might sell $10 worth of stuff on eBay. Stripe doesn’t even publish merchant numbers, and one Stripe integration can represent thousands of sub-merchants. That’s why I focus on TPV, because that actually shows where the money is flowing. When I said only old people use PayPal, it was an exaggeration. Of course, plenty of people still use it. My point was more about the loss of popularity among modern merchants and younger users. And honestly, I see PayPal’s user base number as more bearish than bullish. I prefer companies with great products that still have plenty of room to grow. If a product is already being used by 8% of the world’s population and struggles to grow meaningfully, that’s not great. This isn’t $META or $GOOG, where the product is dominant but faces little real competition. I agree with some of the other points. My perception of Cash App’s popularity was off. And yes, the revenue slowdown and higher marketing spend could be part of the plan for a successful turnaround. But for me, the key concern has more to do with PayPal being in such a competitive market with little growth and with a product that, in my opinion, doesn’t really stand out. At the end of the day, $PYPL trades around a 13× P/E. That seems fair for what the company is today. Even if they push it down to 10× with buybacks and some growth, I still wouldn’t call it a clear buy. I just see better opportunities elsewhere. I wish the bulls the best, and I’m genuinely curious to see if PayPal can find a second wind.
