Colostrum is called "liquid gold" for a reason. It's one of the most powerful tools we have to heal the gut, improve immunity / allergies and even brain function. Colostrum is also known as "first milk." It is the milk produced immediately after birth, within the first few days in cows. This is not any ordinary milk. Because newborns have very underdeveloped guts and immune systems, the colostrum is there to rapidly help fortify and mature it. It contains multiple bioactives to accomplish this: ◇ Immunoglobulin antibodies ◇ Growth factors ◇ Oligosaccharides ◇ Enzymes These factors synergize to yield some incredible benefits. The most prominent component are the immunoglobulins. These act in a few days to help the immune system and digestion: ➥ Immune exclusion: they bind to common pathogens like bacteria and viruses and prevent them from activating the immune response. ➥ Immune tolerance: these antibodies couple with our own immune cells in order to mount a proper response. Without them, the immune system can get overwhelmed and ignite excessive inflammation. ➥ Immune modulation: they can directly induce an anti-inflammatory response in T cells, critical for avoiding autoimmunity, allergies and other histamine related issues. Colostrum also has enzymes and other proteins that help. One is lactoperoxidase, which acts as a direct antimicrobial against bacteria, viruses and even fungi. Lactoperoxidase contains direct anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as well. There is also lysozyme, another antibacterial enzyme, and lactoferrin, which I've written about at length prior. Colostrum also has growth factors, like TGFβ. These are an underrated factor in gut and immune health: ➠ Modulates immune response, generally decreasing inflammation while priming defenses ➠ Induces growth and repair of the gut lining, strengthening this critical barrier and promoting healing. This is a HUGE reason why colostrum is so good for gut health and histamine issues - the gut barrier and its immune system are ground zero for food tolerance and in general having good digestion. Next let's talk about its carb content. You might think it's just full of lactose and other sugars, but you'd be dead wrong. All milk, and especially colostrum, is very rich in compounds called oligosaccharides. These are indigestible longer chain carbohydrates which have their own unique benefits. ➠ Prebiotics - they help feed important bacteria like Bifidobacteria that help establish a proper microbial environment ➠ Pathogen exclusion - they can directly bind to bad bacteria in the gut and prevent them from sticking to the gut lining, which prevents inflammation HUGE benefit. Milk oligosaccharides are very helpful for gut health. We use it frequently with clients with excellent results. One study took patients with inflammatory bowel disease and gave them colostrum enemas alongside their medication, or placebo. Those receiving the colostrum has a marked decrease in their symptoms: ◆ Pain ◆ Bloating ◆ Stool abnormalities Colostrum also helps heal leaky gut. Testing colostrum's effects in athletes shows this - who are known to have greater intestinal permeability due to the excessive stress their bodies are under. Colostrum at 500 mg / day completely reversed their metrics of leaky gut (high zonulin and lactulose / mannose ratio). This is a pretty modest dose. Review studies have concluded that colostrum has benefits for gut conditions. Here they showed that colostrum was able to improve chronic infectious diarrhea. With its numerous mechanisms to modulate gut bacteria, this should come as no surprise. There is also colostrinin, a peptide in colostrum which has a number of benefits for the brain.
