Wasted Curiosity A honeybee colony does something interesting with its workforce. Most of the bees gathering food work known sources. They go where flowers have already been found. There is nectar there. There is pollen there. Another bee has effectively told them where to go. But a smaller group behaves differently. They're called scouts. Depending on conditions, they make up only a fraction of the foraging bees, and instead of simply returning to proven sources, they independently search the landscape for new ones. They do this regularly, even while good sources of food are already available. There is an obvious inefficiency to this. A bee flying toward a known patch of flowers has a reasonable expectation of finding something. A scout doesn't. It may search and find nothing particularly useful at all. But a hive in which every bee only went where flowers had already been found would have a problem. It would become very good at finding yesterday's flowers. And nothing else. There is something wonderfully human about that. We have our own scouts. The person who becomes fascinated with some obscure period of history. The child who wants to know how elevators work. The woman who decides to learn the names of the birds visiting her backyard. The man who spends an evening reading about how ancient people navigated by stars. And almost immediately, we have a question for them. What are you going to do with that? It's a strange question when you think about it. What am I going to do with knowing how an elevator works? What practical advantage will come from recognizing a nuthatch? How will knowing the constellations improve my career? Can the pottery be sold? Can the hobby become a business? Can the knowledge become a credential? Can the interest become useful? We have become remarkably good at making curiosity defend itself. Perhaps because usefulness is easy to measure. We understand learning something because it will get us a better job. We understand taking a course because it earns a qualification. We understand acquiring a skill because somebody will pay us for it. Those destinations are known. The flowers have already been found. Curiosity is different. Curiosity begins before we know where we're going. That's rather the point. And sometimes it leads somewhere extraordinary. History is full of discoveries, inventions, careers, friendships and entire lives that began with someone wandering toward a question for no particularly good reason. That's one of the problems with demanding usefulness in advance. You cannot know what something will lead to before you've followed it. If every journey must provide its destination before we're willing to take the first step, we will become extremely efficient at going only to places we already know. The scout bee understands something about discovery that we sometimes forget. You occasionally have to go somewhere before you have a reason to go there. But even that gives curiosity more responsibility than it deserves. Because curiosity does not need to discover a new field of flowers to justify the flight. Sometimes you read the book... and nothing happens. You spend three weeks learning to identify trees and never make a dollar from it. You learn enough Italian to order dinner and never become fluent. You buy a telescope, learn where Saturn is, look at it through the eyepiece...and remain exactly as employable as you were that morning. Nothing came of it. Except now you've *seen* Saturn. That counts. There is a peculiar poverty in believing that every hour of our lives must produce something beyond itself. Some things are allowed to end in wonder. Some knowledge is allowed to be interesting. Some skills are allowed to be enjoyable. Some questions are worth answering simply because we wanted to know. We don't have to turn every interest into expertise. We don't have to turn every hobby into income.

But a thousand people knowing your name cannot replace one person knowing when you're not yourself. An audience can make you visible. Only another person can make you feel understood. And perhaps that is the distinction worth remembering. We don't spend our lives hoping someone will look at us. We spend them hoping that, eventually someone will see enough to know us. Seen There may never have been a time in human history when it was easier to be seen. We can share where we went. What we ate. What we accomplished. What made us laugh. What made us angry. What we believe. What we're afraid of. Hundreds of people can know what we did yesterday without ever having spoken to us. Thousands can know our face. Millions can know our name. And somehow...we can still feel completely unknown. Perhaps that's because somewhere along the way, we confused two very different human desires. The desire to be seen. And the desire to be known. They look similar from a distance. Both involve another person looking toward us. Both make us feel as though we matter. Both can ease, at least temporarily, that strange human fear of passing through the world unnoticed. But they are not the same thing. Being seen requires attention. Being known requires understanding. One can happen in an instant. The other takes time. To be seen is for someone to know what you did. To be known is for someone to understand why it mattered to you. To be seen is for someone to notice that you're quiet. To be known is for someone to know whether that silence means you're content, exhausted, angry, or simply thinking. To be seen is for someone to know what makes you laugh. To be known is for someone to notice when the laugh isn't quite real. And perhaps that's why attention can become strangely addictive. For a moment, it resembles the thing we're actually looking for. Someone noticed. Someone responded. Someone looked our way. So we reach for it again. Another photograph. Another update. Another little piece of ourselves offered to the world. And there is nothing inherently wrong with any of that. We have always wanted to share our lives. The problem begins when we expect visibility to satisfy a hunger that only intimacy can feed. You can be surrounded by people who recognize you and still desperately want someone who understands you. You can receive a hundred congratulations and still treasure the one person who knows what the achievement cost. You can have thousands of people ask what happened and still be waiting for the person who asks how you're doing after everyone else has stopped asking. That is what it means to be known. It isn't knowing everything about someone. It's knowing which things matter. And that kind of knowing cannot be broadcast. It has to be built. Slowly. Through conversations that wander long past their original subject. Through shared jokes nobody else understands. Through arguments survived. Through comfortable silences. Through remembering the story you've heard six times and listening to it a seventh because you know why they keep telling it. Through noticing the things that were never announced. Maybe that's why some of the people who know us best can communicate so much with almost nothing. A glance across a crowded room. A raised eyebrow. A hand on a shoulder. Two words that would mean absolutely nothing to anyone else. There is an entire history hiding inside those moments. And no audience can manufacture it. We have spent so much time learning how to become visible that we have forgotten how much more valuable it is to become knowable. That requires something attention doesn't. It requires letting someone see the unfinished parts. The uncertainty. The contradiction. The version of ourselves that isn't particularly interesting. The story before we've figured out how to tell it. Being seen lets us choose the picture. Being known means eventually putting the picture down. And maybe that's frightening. Because someone who merely sees us can admire us. Someone who knows us has enough information not to and stays anyway. There will always be something intoxicating about being noticed. Maybe there should be. It feels good to know that our presence registered somewhere outside ourselves.

Four Questions Every meaningful life eventually arrives at the same crossroads. Not once. Again and again. The faces change. The circumstances change. The dreams change. But the questions never do. The first is the easiest. Why? Why should I try? Why should I begin? Why should I believe this is worth doing? It seems like the right place to start. After all, purpose matters. Meaning matters. A life without a "why" is easily blown off course. But there comes a moment when the first question has given us everything it can. The answers are in. The reasons are known. The only thing left is whether we're willing to move. That is when the second question quietly arrives. Why not? Why not learn the language? Why not write the book? Why not start the business? Why not make the call? Why not take the chance? It's an uncomfortable question because it has a habit of exposing excuses we'd mistaken for conclusions. Some of those excuses are real. Many are not. Some are practical. Many are inherited. The world has always been full of reasons not to begin. History remembers the people who eventually asked the different question. Why not? But then comes the most dangerous question of all. Why not now? Tomorrow is one of the most seductive words in the language. Tomorrow I'll start. Tomorrow I'll have more time. Tomorrow I'll be ready. Tomorrow I'll know enough. But then tomorrow quietly becomes next year...and then someday. And finally, never. Life has the unsettling habit of moving while we're still making plans. There is no perfect moment waiting just around the corner. There is only this one. Not because today is ideal. Because today is real. And finally, The question we spend the longest avoiding. Why not me? Not because we think we aren't capable. But because if the answer is, "There is no good reason..." Then something changes. Responsibility arrives. No one is coming to hand us permission. No one is going to declare that we've finally become ready. No one will stand at the edge of our lives and announce that this is our moment. If there is a book to be written...Why not me? If there is kindness to be shown...Why not me? If there is a wrong to be righted...Why not me? If there is a better future to build...Why not me? Perhaps that is what courage has always looked like. Not certainty. Not fearlessness. Just a quiet willingness to let each question lead naturally to the next. Why? Why not? Why not now? Why not me? Most people will spend their lives answering the first question. Some will find the courage to ask the second. A few will embrace the third. But the lives that quietly change the world belong to the people who eventually stop waiting for someone else...and finally ask, Why not me?
