At approx. 11:11 this morning, we received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting black smoke coming from a single family home in the 2700 block of Heatherlyn Cres. Upon arrival, Firefighters confirmed black smoke coming from the roof vents of the home and flames coming from a basement window at the back of the home. Firefighters began a fast attack by applying water from the exterior through the basement window. A secondary crew began searching the home for any occupants. An exclusion zone on the first floor was set up to keep Firefighters off due to the risk of the floor collapsing. At 11:46, Firefighters completed two full searches of the home and confirmed there were no occupants inside. The fire was declared under control at 12:08. Firefighters pulled down parts of the basement ceiling to confirm all hot spots were extinguished to prevent any flare ups. Don't be the one who says, "this would never happen to me." Remember to check your chimneys and flue pipes often for creosote and soot build-up. Keep them clean to prevent a #chimney 🔥🔥. Only working smoke alarms save lives AND can prevent significant property damage!

Crews were called to a home on Kilworthy Road overnight for a fire after the occupants were awoken by their smoke alarms sounding. The early detection limited the damage to around the chimney area only Working smoke alarms save lives AND can prevent significant property damage!

We have 40 on-call firefighters who serve our township & they have a green flashing light on their personal vehicles for responding to emergencies. Firefighters are to follow the rules of the road even when responding to an emergency. Please yield. Every second counts.
