Bill 18 just passed. Alberta will now have a fundamentally different MAID landscape from the rest of Canada. Patients whose death cannot be predicted within 12 months – including those seeking advance requests – are excluded. Physicians cannot assist with out-of-province referrals. Restrictions on “initiating conversations” risks leaving patients unaware of their legally available medical options. Family members presence will be mandatory – even if against the patient’s or family’s wishes.
