THUNDERSTORM OUTLOOK - UPDATE 1 I have removed the Slight risk as I misinterpreted the data by accident. I have added a Very Low risk across Northern England and southern Scotland, and added a low risk across Northern Ireland. Also I expanded he Very Low risk much across Central and southern England and much of Wales. I also made the Marginal risk area smaller, while expanding the low and very low risk further south into the channel

SAT 27 JUNE – Thunderstorm Outlook An increasingly unstable and humid air mass will remain across parts of the UK today, with daytime heating, moderate instability (CAPE) and local convergence boundaries supporting the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms through the afternoon and evening. Convective initiation is expected to become most widespread across eastern England, whilst isolated thunderstorms are also possible across parts of northeast Scotland and Northern Ireland. A Low Risk has been issued across eastern England, northeast Scotland and Northern Ireland, where isolated thunderstorms may produce frequent lightning, torrential downpours, localised surface water flooding, gusty winds and isolated hail. A broader Marginal Risk extends across much of eastern England, where a greater concentration of thunderstorms is expected as mesoscale convergence zones enhance convective development. Across much of East Anglia, a Slight Risk has been introduced where the overlap of moderate instability and locally enhanced deep-layer shear may allow one or two thunderstorms to become more organised than elsewhere. Whilst the majority of storms are expected to remain pulse-type or multicellular, transient supercellular structures cannot be ruled out if an isolated storm remains discrete. Any storm that briefly acquires a more organised structure may produce frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, torrential rainfall leading to localised flash flooding, stronger convective wind gusts and isolated larger hail. Confidence is moderate, with the exact coverage and intensity of thunderstorms dependent on where mesoscale boundaries develop and how effectively they initiate convection. Consequently, some locations within the risk areas may remain largely dry, whilst others could experience slow-moving, locally intense thunderstorms over a relatively short period. SAT 27 JUNE – Thunderstorm Outlook A conditional risk of thunderstorms exists across parts of south-east England overnight, mainly between 00:00 BST and 06:00 BST, with the greatest chance across Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey, Greater London, Essex and into parts of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and East Anglia. Very warm and humid air remains in place following the recent heat, resulting in a moderately unstable environment. While thunderstorms are expected to develop across the English Channel this evening, how far north they progress into areas such as Greater London, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire will largely depend on how they interact with the unstable airmass over inland southern England. If they are able to maintain or intensify as they move inland, scattered thunderstorms could develop further north; however, if they weaken over the Channel, storm coverage inland will be much more limited. A Slight Risk has been issued across the far south-east where confidence is highest in thunderstorm development, surrounded by a broader Marginal Risk extending further inland. The main hazards include frequent lightning, large hail and torrential downpours capable of producing localised flash flooding. There is also a low risk of isolated thunderstorms briefly developing supercellular structures, particularly within the Slight Risk area, which could enhance the potential for larger hail and more persistent storm organisation. While many locations within the risk area may remain dry, any storms that do develop could become locally impactful before gradually easing towards dawn.

How it feels waiting for a major thunderstorm to hit my area

A pretty active storm has develop just south-west of Scotland in the Celtic Sea. It does look like there is a few hail cores in this multi cell

THUNDERSTORM OUTLOOK – INITIAL FORECAST Following Thursday's thunderstorms, which proved less widespread than many convection-allowing models had indicated, another hot and humid day is expected across much of the UK and Ireland. With fewer storms overnight across many areas, temperatures and humidity have remained elevated, while good spells of sunshine through the morning should allow strong daytime heating to develop. Combined with an approaching upper-level disturbance and sufficient deep-layer shear, conditions will once again become favourable for scattered thunderstorms to develop through the day. Thunderstorms are expected to initiate from late morning across western Ireland before developing more widely across northern England, southern Scotland and eastern Scotland during the afternoon. Additional storms may also develop across parts of southeast England later in the day where instability is able to build. Although thunderstorms are not expected to be as widespread as originally forecast on Thursday, any storm that develops could intensify quickly, producing frequent lightning, torrential rainfall, large hail, damaging wind gusts and localised flash flooding. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out where storms interact with local convergence boundaries. The greatest confidence for severe thunderstorms is highlighted by the High Risk across western Ireland, southern Scotland and northeast England. These are the areas where the overlap of instability, lift and wind shear appears most favourable for organised severe thunderstorms. A broader Slight Risk extends across much of Scotland, northern England, parts of the Midlands and southeast England, where scattered thunderstorms are expected and a number could become severe. Surrounding this, a Marginal Risk covers much of England, Wales and Ireland, where isolated thunderstorms remain possible but coverage and severity are expected to be lower. The remaining Low Risk areas indicate where thunderstorms are least likely, although an isolated storm cannot be completely ruled out. Overall, confidence is moderate that scattered thunderstorms will develop during Friday afternoon and early evening. Unlike Thursday, the expectation is not for widespread storm coverage, but rather fewer storms with the potential to become locally severe where they do develop. The most favourable window for organised thunderstorms currently appears to be between 1400 BST and 2000 BST, before activity gradually weakens into the evening. THUNDERSTORM OUTLOOK – UPDATE 3 Changes from Update 2: The latest UKV, AROME, ICON-D2 and other convection-allowing models are in better agreement that thunderstorms will become more widespread across western and central Britain during Thursday afternoon and evening. As a result, the Moderate Risk has been expanded across more of central and southern Britain, while the High Risk has been refined across western and northern Scotland where confidence is highest for organised severe thunderstorms. The overnight severe thunderstorm risk has also been adjusted further south across Wales and southwest England to reflect an increasing signal for organised storm clusters. A significant thunderstorm event remains likely from Thursday afternoon through to the early hours of Friday as a warm, humid and increasingly unstable airmass moves north across the UK and Ireland ahead of an approaching Atlantic trough. Thunderstorms are expected to develop initially across Ireland, Wales and southwest England before becoming more widespread through the afternoon. With increasing deep-layer shear, some storms are expected to organise into multicells and isolated supercells, before merging into larger clusters as they move northeast through the evening and overnight. The greatest risk of severe thunderstorms remains across western and northern Scotland, where the overlap of instability, forcing and favourable wind profiles is expected to be greatest. Within the High Risk area, thunderstorms may produce very frequent lightning, torrential rainfall, large hail and damaging wind gusts, while repeated storms could lead to localised flash flooding. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out with any discrete supercell that develops ahead of the main convective clusters. A broad Moderate Risk extends across much of Ireland, Wales, northern England, central England and southwest Britain, where numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop. While not every location will experience severe weather, the strongest storms will be capable of producing large hail, intense rainfall and frequent lightning. As storms merge into larger clusters during the evening, the risk of damaging wind gusts is expected to increase, particularly across western and central parts of Britain. Further east, a Slight Risk extends across eastern England, with a Marginal Risk covering much of the southeast. Thunderstorm coverage is expected to be lower than further west, although there remains a conditional risk that organised storms or convective clusters survive into the region during the early hours of Friday. Should this occur, locally torrential rain, frequent lightning and strong wind gusts would still be possible. Confidence has increased since Update 2, with improving agreement between the latest high-resolution guidance on the development of organised thunderstorms. While the exact placement of the most severe storms will depend on mesoscale boundaries that cannot yet be resolved precisely, the highest confidence remains across western and northern Scotland, with severe thunderstorms also possible across much of Ireland, Wales and central parts of Britain.
