Liverpool was today hosting another major TV production, with film crews working on the upcoming drama series Army of Shadows spotted across the city. The six-part thriller is a dystopian reimagining of Jean-Pierre Melville's classic French Resistance film. Set in a near-future Britain under de facto American occupation, the series follows a former British Army officer as he builds a covert resistance movement, exploring the challenges, sacrifices and moral dilemmas faced by people fighting to reclaim their country. Written by Top Boy and The Day of the Jackal creator Ronan Bennett, Army of Shadows is being co-produced by Channel 4 and Canal+, alongside STUDIOCANAL and Two Cities Television. Liverpool joins Manchester, London and Paris as filming locations, with the city once again showcasing the versatility and character of its streets and architecture. Major film and television productions continue to choose the Liverpool City Region as a backdrop, bringing investment into the local economy, supporting jobs and businesses, and strengthening the region's reputation as one of the UK's leading destinations for screen production.

@MetroMayorSteve visited @LazizCafe - a community business in St Helens that uses food and language classes to build connections between local people, refugees and asylum seekers. The project was one of the first to be supported by @kindred_lcr - an independent Community Interest Company set up in 2020 with £5.5m from the Combined Authority to support socially trading organisations. Since then Kindred has gone on to create more than £35m in economic and social value, investing £3m in 51 socially trading organisations and creating 200 jobs.

With hot weather forecast across the North West over the weekend and into next week, it can be tempting to cool off in open water. However, reservoirs and other areas of open water are extremely dangerous and are not safe places to swim. Around 200 people lose their lives in accidental drownings in open water across the UK every year. Even on the hottest days, the water temperature of open water can remain much colder than expected, often only reaching around 12°C to 16°C. Cold water shock can happen quickly, affecting your breathing, movement and ability to stay afloat. As temperatures rise this week, please stay safe, choose designated swimming locations, and stay out of reservoirs and other open water. 🎞️|The government advisor tasked with getting more young people into jobs and training visited visited @LimePictures and met with cast and crew from @Hollyoaks @alanmilburn1958 was joined by @MetroMayorSteve at the TV company's headquarters yesterday as part of efforts to tackle the growing NEET crisis, with more than one million young people across the UK currently not in education, employment or training. The visit - which also included @COLCollege and a Youth Action Forum at the Combined Authority offices at Mann Island - highlighted the work being done in the region to tackle the issue and how successful local partnerships through schemes like the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer can be part of the solution. Lime Pictures - founded by producer and writer Phil Redmond in the early 1980s - also showcased how paid training and work experience placements are helping young people into careers in film and TV.

A new Homelessness Task Force is set to be created in the Liverpool City Region to accelerate action to prevent and reduce homelessness. A commitment in the Mayor’s 2024 manifesto, the proposed Task Force will bring together experts from across sectors - such as local authorities, health, criminal justice and delivery partners - to take a more joined up approach to preventing homelessness. If approved at the Combined Authority meeting next week, £1.9m will be allocated to the Task Force which will launch in the Autumn. 👉 ow.ly/a2XY50ZmlBU

Alan Milburn visited Liverpool City Region today to see first-hand how local partnerships are helping young people onto the career ladder. Joined by Mayor Steve Rotheram, the former government minister visited Lime Pictures - creators of Hollyoaks - and met employers and partners supporting the City Region's Youth Guarantee Trailblazer, which is helping young people not in employment, education or training (NEET) access opportunities and overcome barriers to work. The visit - which also included The City of Liverpool College and a Youth Action Forum at the Combined Authority headquarters at Mann Island - comes as he prepares the final recommendations of his government-commissioned review into the growing NEET crisis, with more than one million young people across the UK currently not in education, employment or training. The City Region is recognised as a leader in tackling the issue. Through the Trailblazer, the Combined Authority has engaged more than 1,500 young people, delivering more than 2,000 interventions and supporting hundreds into employment, training and learning. The visit highlighted the role local employers can play in creating opportunities for young people, with Lime Pictures showcasing how businesses can help open doors to careers in the creative industries. The TV production company, founded by producer and writer Phil Redmond in the early 1980s, is part of the newly-launched “Foot in the Door” initiative aimed at tackling the growing youth NEET opportunity crisis through paid training and work experience placements. The Combined Authority is also supporting the Milburn review's work on future system reforms, including proposals for greater local powers and funding to help young people get on the career ladder.
