InnMay 2026, on a farm outside Swartruggens, North West, 481 kg of pure meth and a laboratory valued at over R1 billion. Eleven arrested, including Mexicans, Mozambicans, Zimbabweans and locals. These are not kitchen setups. These are industrial operations deliberately placed on remote farms because rural South Africa offers isolation, weak policing, and easy local facilitation. Nigerian networks broker the deals; Mexican chemists fly in with the expertise; African partners supply the land, logistics and protection. Mexican chemists have now been found at 11 of 12 major clandestine labs raided across Africa in the last two years.

Mixed sex toilets. Today I visited an establishment with mixed-sex toilets. I pushed open a door marked with the usual male/female symbol. Inside were four cubicles, with approx 7ft-high dividers that didn’t reach the approx 10ft ceiling. Two men were washing their hands. “I don’t think I’m in the right space,” I said. “You are — and it’s freaking us out too,” one replied. This isn’t comfortable for women and it clearly isn’t comfortable for men either.

White 56-year-old husband and father Fredrick Lytton was working alongside Black 23-year-old Devin Rice at a U-Haul facility in West Nashville. You already know how this ends. Yesterday I posted about seeing our first yellow American school bus. 🇺🇸🚌 Today, this is the education news from home in South Africa. 🇿🇦 Learners at Eastbank High School in Alexandra burned school furniture this week. The school was built for about 1,200 learners. Today it has 2,063. It still faces major shortages, overcrowding and damaged infrastructure. And this is what I need Americans to understand: South Africa did not become this overnight. It happened slowly. One cut. One delay. One broken system. One lowered standard. One excuse at a time. Until people got used to things that should never have become normal. I grew up there. I became a teacher there. I watched things disappear. School buses. Reliable infrastructure. Safety. Standards. Trust. That is why yesterday’s little yellow school bus hit us so hard. Children standing safely outside their homes. A bus arriving when it should. A system working. To Americans, ordinary. To us, almost unbelievable. Please do not take that for granted. Protect what works. Protect your schools. Protect your communities. Demand accountability. Respect what previous generations built. Because once a country starts accepting decline as normal, rebuilding it is far harder than protecting it in the first place. Yesterday, that school bus made me smile.
