ZIMCODD Board Chairperson Rosewita Katsande officially opened the 8th Zimbabwe Annual Debt Conference in Masvingo, calling for a people-centred approach to sovereign debt management that advances justice, protects Zimbabwe’s sovereignty and delivers inclusive socio-economic development. Speaking under the conference theme, “Rethinking Sovereign Debt Management in Zimbabwe: Justice, Sovereignty and People-Centred Socio-Economic Development in a Global Polycrisis,” she highlighted the urgent need to confront Zimbabwe’s debt burden, strengthen domestic resource mobilisation, protect investment in essential public services and pursue home-grown solutions that put citizens at the centre of economic decision-making. The Girls Table was honoured to participate in the Global Day to Fight Inequality meeting hosted by Fight Inequality Alliance Zimbabwe. The dialogue brought together civil society organisations, activists, and students to reflect on the widening inequalities affecting communities and to collectively advocate for a more just and equitable Zimbabwe. ​One of the areas of discussion was the urgent need to strengthen Zimbabwe's public healthcare system. Participants emphasized that quality healthcare is a fundamental human right and called on the Government to allocate resources fairly and invest in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and other essential public services. ​The discussion also reflected on the commitments made under the Abuja Declaration (2001), in which African Union Member States pledged to allocate at least 15% of their annual national budgets to the health sector to improve health outcomes. Participants noted that Zimbabwe is yet to meet this benchmark consistently and stressed that it is equally important for allocated funds to be fully disbursed and accounted for. The meeting also highlighted the value of the Blue Book as a tool for tracking budget allocations and promoting accountability. ​As conversations on inequality continue, participants called for increased investment in priority public services that directly improve people's lives and reduce inequality. As one participant aptly remarked, "Sometimes you just have to be a mosquito, you never know where your input will land," reminding everyone that every voice and every act of advocacy contributes to meaningful change. ​The Girls Table remains committed to advocating for gender-responsive public financing, accountable governance, and equitable access to quality public services for all. #HerVoice ​#FixOurPublicHealthcareZW #WeThe99 #GDFI2026 #RedCardToInequality
