I woke up early on July 4th to a call from my friend, mentor, and fellow Florida Congressman @RepBrianMast. Brian had a problem — a group of his constituents were supposed to march in the Independence Day Parade, which had been cancelled due to the insane heat. To try to salvage their day, Brian wanted to give them a private tour of the Capitol. One problem — a Member can only bring 100 people in at a time and this group was estimated at 150. He asked if I’d throw on some clothes and head over to help get the group in. Brian Mast is a war hero, and at some point he’ll learn that when he asks me to do something, he can just assume the answer is yes. To my surprise, when I showed up, the group turned out to be kilt-wearing, bagpipe-playing firefighters, mostly from all over Florida, but from more than a dozen states too. We got them into the Capitol, and in the Dome of our Democracy, these heroes decided to put on a performance of their own. No bagpipes, just voices. The fireworks were great. But jumping out of bed to help these heroes get a private tour of our nation’s Capitol on Independence Day? That was the highlight. Thanks, Brian, for embodying the best of America and letting me play a tiny part in helping you yesterday.

It blows my mind that American men can be drafted and sent to die in war, yet they still have to compete against foreigners for jobs in their own country. U.S. hospitals are reportedly openly advertising $5,000 “birth packages” to foreigners in Latin America so their kids can be born U.S. citizens in Texas The ads promise citizenship for the child following the recent Supreme Court ruling on birthright citizenship. Hospitals in border states are actively recruiting pregnant women from other countries to fly in, give birth here, and secure American citizenship for the baby. This is exactly the kind of birth tourism and anchor baby exploitation that critics warned would explode after the ruling. Congress needs to shut this down immediately. American citizenship should never be for sale. Spread the word far and wide so more people see how this loophole is being turned into a business. He talked about inheritance, character, and the fact that America was built by people who refused to kneel to bad ideas. He treated the country like something worth defending without hedging or self-loathing. The reaction wasn’t disagreement. It was contempt.
