At Rochester Memorial Elementary School, the girl was using the girls’ restroom when the male student looked under the stall, then forced the door open while she was still exposed. Her father, Luis Rivera, stood before the Rochester School Committee on May 7 and described what happened to his daughter: “My daughter was humiliated, embarrassed, frightened, and left feeling completely violated while sitting defenseless in what should have been a private and safe moment for any child.” The school pointed to Massachusetts guidance that allows students to use restrooms matching their gender identity and suggested the girl’s discomfort was not a reason to restrict the boy’s access. The parents have filed a Title IX complaint seeking protection for their daughter and other girls. A little girl’s privacy and safety should never be optional. At one point she asked that film productions give jobs to homeless people—that this “would really help her out.” What kind of idiot walks into a room of mostly out-of-work people, in an industry that is collapsing upon itself, that does productions with limited time and money where a mistake from an inexperienced worker can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and suggest that unskilled, perhaps drug-addled, clueless homeless people should be employed instead of qualified guild members? This was just one of the many aspects of the film business of which she was utterly ignorant.
