Israeli Who Pepper-Sprayed 9-Year-Old Armenian In Jerusalem Released With Restraining Order & Four Days Of House Arrest
➖➖➖
The 22-year-old Israeli Jewish settler who pepper-sprayed William, a 9-year-old Armenian Christian boy, in Jerusalem on Yom Kippur has been released with a restraining order and four days of house arrest while the case proceeds. He is from Ganei Modi'in, a Haredi-majority Israeli settlement in the West Bank. Jerusalemite-Armenian journalist Kegham Balian reported the release, citing the original report by Israeli investigative journalist Yossi Eli.
"Had he been an Armenian man attacking a Jewish boy, Ben-Gvir would've put him in a hole," Balian said, referring to Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who oversees the police.
Israeli police arrested him in northern Israel on Sunday, September 27, after locating him through intelligence work. Investigators had returned to the scene and reconstructed the attack together with William's father.
William was riding his bicycle on Mamilla Boulevard near Jaffa Gate on Yom Kippur, listening to music through headphones, when he was attacked. His mother told Haaretz that a man she estimated to be around 30 signaled her son to stop while keeping one hand behind his back. "He planned it in advance. William stopped, took off his headphones and said something to him in English, and then the man sprayed him." She said the man attacked after realizing her son did not speak Hebrew.
Eli, who first reported the incident, said the attackers approached the child with threats and demanded he remove his headphones. After William complied, they heard him speaking English, and one said "No English, Jews!" before spraying him.
"We, as a Jewish people who survived the Holocaust and suffer from anti-Semitism in the world, should be ashamed of the hatred that extremists show towards Christians," Eli said.
William was treated by paramedics in an ambulance. Israeli Channel 13 aired the footage, in which his mother can be heard comforting him and reassuring him that his younger sister Arev was safe.
The family filed a police complaint after William was treated at the hospital, and police closed the case almost immediately. Asked by Haaretz to explain, police said the file was closed "after all investigative directions were examined and in accordance with the evidentiary basis that was formed."
"I promised him the police were trying to catch him, and then they announced they closed the case," William's mother said. "I got a slap in the face."
The morning after Channel 13 broadcast the story, police called the family and asked to question William again. The investigation was reopened, and the arrest followed on September 27.
William told Channel 13 that he now wears a helmet on his way home from school. Asked what he wanted, he said: "I just want him to be in prison."
George Deek, Israel's Special Envoy to the Christian World, announced the arrest publicly on September 28. Deek was appointed to the newly created post on April 23, 2026, after serving as Israel's ambassador to Azerbaijan. "Israel takes violence against Christians seriously. And when the victim is a child, there can be no excuses and no looking the other way," Deek said.
On August 2, six Israelis, five minors and one adult, spat at the entrance of the Armenian Cathedral of St. James, banged on its gates and threw stones at the compound and at the window of an Armenian woman filming them from her home. Four more were arrested over that attack at the end of August. On September 26, surveillance footage captured an Israeli Jewish man attempting to urinate on the monastery wall before an Armenian guard forced him away.
The Religious Freedom Data Center, an independent Israeli watchdog founded in June 2023 by the scholar Yisca Harani, recorded 50 anti-Christian incidents between April and June 2025. Sixty-four percent occurred within the Old City, and half of those were centered around the Armenian Patriarchate, making it the most frequently targeted Christian site in Jerusalem. The Rossing Center's 2025 report documented 155 incidents, including 61 physical assaults, 52 attacks on church property, 28 incidents of verbal harassment, and 14 cases of vandalism against Christian signs and symbols.
The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem dates to the 7th century, and Armenian presence in the city is documented from at least the 4th. The Armenian community of the Old City numbered 1,598 in 1967 and now stands at around 2,000.

"They grabbed the cross of the Bishop, put it on the floor, and smashed it!"
Every single day there is an anti-Christian incident in Jerusalem.
Every. Single. Day.
Three years ago today, humanity failed. Once again.
On 19.09.2023 #Azerbaijan launched its military offensive against #Artsakh/#NagornoKarabakh. Within days, my homeland was emptied of its indigenous Armenian population.
The world watched. Artsakh was emptied. Humanity failed.
These are the brave and selfless Israeli Jewish volunteers of the Religious Freedom Data Center (RFDC), a watchdog organization that monitors and archives anti-Christian hate crimes.
They take turns being stationed at Christian holy sites, accompany the Armenian Patriarchate during processions within the Old City of Jerusalem, and directly face the attackers with cameras to document their hate.
In the past two days, they documented more than a dozen incidents.
If Israel is such a safe haven for Christians, why is there a need for such an organization?
Today an Israeli Jewish man pinched his nose in disgust as he passed by a procession of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem on its way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Such contempt. What are they teaching about Christianity?
Ararat-Armenia Makes History, First Armenian Club to Reach UEFA Europa League Phase 🇦🇲
➖➖➖
Armenian champions FC Ararat-Armenia have qualified for the league phase of the UEFA Europa League, becoming the first Armenian club to reach the main stage of a European competition, reports Zartonk Sports. They beat Romania's Universitatea Craiova 1:0 in Yerevan on Thursday to go through 2:1 on aggregate.
Ararat won a penalty in the second minute of stoppage time, with the tie level and extra time looming. Sandro Lima stepped up, but Craiova goalkeeper Laurențiu Popescu saved it. A video review ordered the kick retaken because a defender had entered the box too early. Popescu saved the second attempt as well, but the rebound fell to Lima, who buried it to send the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium into celebration.
The first leg in Romania had finished 1:1, with Alexandros Malis putting Ararat ahead before Nicușor Bancu equalized for Craiova. Lima's stoppage-time goal in the return leg settled the tie across the two matches.
Ararat-Armenia went into the second leg already assured of European football this fall, holding a guaranteed place in the Conference League league phase. Beating Craiova upgraded them to the Europa League, UEFA's second-tier competition, and made them the first Armenian club to reach the main stage of any European tournament.
Their run to this point began in the Champions League, where they eliminated Latvia's Riga FC and Ireland's Shamrock Rovers before losing to Slovenia's Celje and dropping into the Europa League play-off. Lima scored decisive goals in both of those earlier ties, and again in the stoppage-time win over Craiova.
The draw for the Europa League league phase takes place on Friday, August 28.

The First Time Armenian Was Spoken In An American Movie: "The Deep Six" (1958) 🇦🇲🎞️
➖➖➖
In 1958, the Armenian language reached an American movie screen for the first time. The film was "The Deep Six," a WWII Navy drama starring Alan Ladd and directed by Rudolph Maté, and the man who delivered the scene was Ross Bagdasarian, the Armenian American musician who would soon create Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Bagdasarian plays Pvt. Aaron Slobodjian, a sailor who brings his shipmates to a gathering of fellow Armenians. He climbs onto the stage and addresses the room in fluent Armenian, then turns to his Navy friends and switches to English: “Let’s show our sailor cousins what real Armenian hospitality is.”
In the scene, the waiter who greets the table was played by Al Nalbandian, a San Francisco florist and actor of Armenian descent. He says “parev” to the sailors, and Ross orders. Nalbandian ran his family’s flower stand near Union Square for more than 70 years while building a screen career that ran through “American Graffiti,” “The Conversation,” “Tucker,” and other films, many of them for Francis Ford Coppola. His account of the scene passed down through his family.
It was the first time Armenian was spoken in an American film. Earlier American pictures had told Armenian stories, including the 1919 silent film “Ravished Armenia,” but a silent film carried no spoken language. And the Armenian-language talking films of the 1930s and 1940s were made overseas by Soviet studios, not in Hollywood.
For Bagdasarian, it fit a pattern. He had done the same with music, turning an Armenian folk melody into a number one pop hit, “Come On-a My House,” written with his cousin William Saroyan.
The story reaches the present through Al Nalbandian’s son-in-law, film producer Patrick Malkassian, whose 2022 film “Amerikatsi” drew on his own family’s survival of the Soviet era.
The scene runs only a few minutes, but it put the Armenian language on an American screen for the first time.
On July 21, thousands gathered at Cascade as the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra closed its 20th anniversary season with a free open-air concert in the heart of Yerevan. 🇦🇲
From Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Khachaturian, and Aznavour to symphonic performances of System of a Down, Led Zeppelin, and Michael Jackson, the evening celebrated music across generations. The crowd also experienced powerful orchestral arrangements of beloved Armenian melodies like Kochari and Yarkhushta, turning one of Yerevan's most iconic landmarks into a stage for an unforgettable summer night.

Just one day after being named a Chevalier (Knight) of France's Order of Arts and Letters, we're revisiting one of our favorite performances by French-Armenian composer and vocalist Essaï Altounian 🇦🇲🇫🇷
Filmed in April 2025 inside the 4th-century Geghard Monastery, Essaï performs the ancient Armenian prayer "Der Voghormia" (Տէր ողորմիա, "Lord, Have Mercy") completely a cappella.
Carved into the cliffs more than 1,600 years ago, Geghard's remarkable acoustics allow every note to echo through the stone, making this thousand-year-old prayer feel as timeless as the monastery itself.

ON THIS DAY in 1876, Christophor Araratian, The Hero General Whose Artillery Saved Armenia At The 1918 Battle Of Sardarabad, Was Born. 🇦🇲
➖➖➖
150 years ago today, on June 18, 1876, one of the most consequential military commanders in modern Armenian history was born in Tiflis, the city now known as Tbilisi. Major General Christophor Araratian (Araratov) would lead the artillery that saved the Armenian nation from extinction in May 1918, serve as Minister of Military Affairs of the First Republic of Armenia, and be martyred in 1937 during Stalin's Great Purge, executed by firing squad alongside his fellow Sardarabad hero General Movses Silikyan and other Armenian colonels for the very independence he had once helped secure.
From The Tiflis Cadet Corps To The Russian Empire
Araratian was born into a noble Armenian military family. His father Karapet was a lieutenant colonel of the Russian Imperial Army, and the son was raised to follow him. At 10 years old, he entered the Tiflis Cadet Corps, where he studied for 7 years. From there he advanced to the prestigious Mikhaylov Artillery School in Saint Petersburg, finishing in the top three of his class, an achievement that earned him the right to choose his post.
He chose the Caucasus, returning to serve in the Caucasian Brigade of Grenade Artillery near Tiflis. He served on the front of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904 to 1905 by his own request, fought in the First World War on the Romanian front, and rose steadily through the ranks of the Russian Imperial Army.
Sardarabad, May 1918
In late 1917 and early 1918, as the Russian Empire collapsed and Ottoman armies pushed eastward to finish what the Armenian Genocide had begun, the Armenian National Council in Tiflis began to assemble a national army from the Armenian officers of the Russian service. Under Sparapet Tovmas Nazarbekian, Colonel Araratian was given command of the 2nd Artillery Brigade of the Armenian Corps.
In May 1918, the Ottoman army marched on Yerevan with the stated aim of erasing the surviving Armenian nation from the map. What followed at the village of Sardarabad, between May 21 and May 29, was the most consequential battle in modern Armenian history. Outnumbered and outgunned, Armenian forces stopped the Ottoman advance and turned it back. The independence of the First Republic of Armenia, declared three days after the battle ended, was made possible by what happened on that field.
Araratian's artillery brigade was at the center of the victory. The Russian press would later call him "Bog Sardarapata," the God of Sardarabad. After the battle, he was promoted to Major General.
Minister Of Military Affairs
In March 1919, Major General Araratian was appointed Minister of Military Affairs of the First Republic of Armenia, a post he retained through the coalition, interim, and regular cabinets of Prime Minister Alexandre Khatisian. As military minister, he carried the burden of defending a young republic surrounded by collapsing empires and hostile neighbors, with limited resources and impossible odds.
The City's General
After the fall of the First Republic in 1920 and his return to Soviet Armenia in 1921, Araratian took up academic positions, including head of the military chair at Yerevan State University. He became a beloved figure on the streets of Yerevan, always immaculately dressed, walking down Alaverdyan Street to a chorus of greetings from the citizens who knew him as the city's general.
Martyred At Nork
On September 2, 1937, during the Great Purge, Stalin's secret police arrested Christophor Araratian. The charges were nationalism, the crime that for an Armenian patriot of his generation meant precisely the act of having helped found the Republic. After three months in prison, on December 10, 1937, he was driven to the Nork gorge outside Yerevan, on the site of what is now the Yerevan Zoo, and shot alongside his fellow Sardarabad hero General Movses Silikyan and other Armenian colonels.
His wife took packages to the KGB for years afterward, asking them to be delivered to her husband, not knowing he was already dead. The family was given a false death certificate in 1955 stating he had died of a heart attack in 1943. Only in 1956, when the Supreme Court of the Armenian SSR declared the 1937 sentence null and void, did they learn the truth.
A Legacy Restored
Christophor Araratian was rehabilitated posthumously. His medals were returned to his family. His name was restored to the history books. The Republic he helped found, lost, and helped found again now stands as the Republic of Armenia, and the battle that made it possible is taught in every Armenian school as the day a nation refused to die.
150 years after his birth, the man whose artillery saved Armenia at Sardarabad belongs to the small number of figures whose lives define the boundaries of the modern Armenian nation. His enemies were many: Ottoman armies that wished to finish the Genocide, Soviet purgers who wished to erase his role in independence. Both failed. The Republic stands. The general endures.
