UPDATE: KWA-THEMA WOMAN ARRESTED FOR STAGING HER KIDNAPPING The 37-year-old woman who was allegedly kidnapped and rescued in Kwa-Thema has been arrested, together with her accomplice, for staging the kidnapping. The two suspects were arrested on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, following intensive investigations by Kwa-Thema detectives, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and Crime Intelligence. Investigations revealed that the woman allegedly conspired with her accomplice to stage the kidnapping in an attempt to extort money from her cousin. Both suspects are expected to appear before court on charges of defeating the ends of justice, #extortion and staging a crime scene. The police in Gauteng strongly warn members of the public against making false reports or staging criminal incidents, as such actions divert critical police resources from genuine cases and undermine efforts to combat crime and protect communities. Members of the public are further urged to use police services responsibly and provide truthful information when reporting criminal incidents.

WESTERN CAPE FESTIVE SEASON SAFETY CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED -179 NEW POLICE VEHICLES TO BOOST OPERATIONS Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia officially launched the Western Cape Safer Festive Season 2026/2027 campaign in Nyanga today announcing the deployment of approximately 179 new police vehicles across the province’s six districts to strengthen policing operations and improve service delivery. The launch follows the national festive season safety campaign in Mpumalanga last week, as police prepare for an increase in travel, tourism, social gatherings and other activities during the holiday period. Cachalia warned that while the festive season is a time for families to come together and enjoy a break, it is also a period when criminals may exploit opportunities to target residents, businesses and holidaymakers. The Western Cape attracts thousands of local and international visitors, making increased police visibility and effective crime prevention operations critical. The South African Police Service (SAPS) will intensify operations and increase police visibility in both urban and rural communities, focusing on preventing and combating serious and violent crime, maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of residents and visitors. The 179 new vehicles are intended to bolster operational capacity, improve police responsiveness and strengthen the ability of officers to address policing needs across the province. The vehicle allocation forms part of broader efforts under the SAPS Reset Agenda to improve the capacity and effectiveness of the police service. GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE ALSO A PRIORITY Cachalia stressed that the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) must remain a national priority throughout the festive season and beyond. He called for the protection of women and children from abuse and violence, emphasising that violence has no place in homes, communities or public spaces. The Acting Minister also acknowledged the commitment of SAPS members and other law enforcement officers who will remain on duty while many South Africans take a break. He urged officers to remain vigilant, follow their training, act decisively within the law and prioritise their own safety and that of their colleagues. He further emphasised the importance of professionalism, integrity and ethical conduct. Cachalia said fighting crime requires a coordinated effort involving all spheres of government, law enforcement agencies and communities. KIMBERLEY HOSTS AFRICA’S FIRST REPORTED OLLIF SPINAL SURGERY A surgical team has reportedly performed Africa’s first trans-Kambin Oblique Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion (OLLIF), a minimally invasive spinal fusion procedure, at Lenmed Royal Hospital and Heart Centre, followed by procedures at Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital. The pioneering collaboration involved Dr Antony Thomas, Dr Tayo Sulaiman and Prof Aftab Younus, with US-based neurosurgeon Prof Hamid Reza Abbasi providing observation and educational guidance. OLLIF is designed to stabilise the lower spine and relieve symptoms associated with certain spinal conditions, using a less invasive approach than traditional open surgery. Potential benefits include reduced blood loss and shorter hospital stays, although outcomes and suitability vary by patient. “The achievement follows years of training and collaboration and could help expand specialist surgical skills and access to advanced spinal care in South Africa. “Local company Mzanzi Spine, based in Kimberley, supplies the specialised spinal cages used in the technique. SUSPECT TO APPEAR IN COURT FOLLOWING R1.5 MILLION ILLICIT CIGARETTE SEIZURE IN MUSINA A 36-year-old Zimbabwean national is expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, following his arrest during an intelligence-led operation targeting an alleged illicit cigarette syndicate in Musina. The suspect was arrested on Monday, 19 October 2026, after police conducted an operation at premises suspected of being used to store large quantities of #IllicitCigarettes. The operation was conducted by a multidisciplinary team comprising Provincial Organised Crime Investigation: Threat-Based Unit, Musina Detectives, Provincial Organised and Crime Investigation (Narcotics) Unit. During the operation, police recovered 55 boxes and 46 cartons of Remington Gold cigarettes valued at approximately R1.5 million. Two motor vehicles, with a combined estimated value of R600 000, were also seized. The suspect faces charges of possession and transportation of illicit cigarettes. The suspected syndicate leader and four other suspects fled the scene and remain at large. Police have launched efforts to trace and arrest the outstanding suspects as investigations continue to identify and dismantle the alleged syndicate. The Provincial Commissioner of the #SAPS in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers, commended the police teams for their coordinated efforts in disrupting suspected organised criminal activities. POLICE SEIZE OVER 375 KG OF DAGGA, FIREARM, AND AMMUNITION IN TWO SEPARATE OPERATIONS IN GERT SIBANDE DISTRICT @SAPoliceService The Police in Hartebeeskop arrested two male citizens from the Kingdom of Eswatini, aged 26 and 38, for allegedly dealing in dagga and possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition. The arrests were effected today, 20 October 2026, at about 14:30 near the Oshoek Port of Entry. As part of the continued efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to combat drug-related crime, Police spotted a Toyota Fortuner bearing Eswatini registration number plates. The vehicle was stopped and then searched, and that was when Police found a large quantity of dagga inside. The dagga weighed approximately 272.65 kg's, with an estimated street value of about R1.1 million. Police also seized a black 9mm Girson pistol, one magazine, and 13 live rounds of ammunition. The vehicle, firearm, ammunition, and dagga were seized for further investigation. The suspects were charged with: • Dealing in dagga; • Possession of an unlicensed firearm; • Possession of ammunition; and • Contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa. The two suspects are expected to appear at Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court soon, facing the above-mentioned charges. In a separate incident, members of the SAPS from Secunda Flying Squad found dagga on the N17 Road near Leandra on 19 October 2026. The members were conducting patrol duties when they spotted a light-blue Honda Civic bearing Gauteng registration number plates. When members attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the men and women in Blue discovered dagga loaded on the rear passenger seat and inside the boot. The vehicle was seized, along with the dagga, weighing 103 kg, with an estimated street value of about R800 000. (Eight Hundred Thousand Rand) for further investigation. The Provincial Commissioner of the #SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, commended the members for their swift response and dedication. The General further emphasised that the Police will continue to ensure safety at the ports of entry, combat the trafficking of drugs and illicit items, and ensure perpetrators face the full might of the law.

National Commissioner Leads Unannounced Search at Klerksdorp Correctional Facility: The National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Mr Makgothi Thobakgale, is leading an unannounced search operation at Klerksdorp Correctional Facility in the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West Region tonight (20 October 2026). The operation aims to remove illegal and prohibited items from the facility, strengthen security and ensure the safe custody of inmates. It also forms part of the Department’s efforts in support of the Safer Festive Season Campaign. Klerksdorp Correctional Facility accommodates offenders convicted of serious crimes, including murder, rape and robbery. As part of the operation, offenders are being taken out of their cells and given an opportunity to voluntarily declare any prohibited items in their possession before the cells are searched. So far, three cellphones voluntarily declared by offenders have been confiscated. Offenders found in possession of contraband will face disciplinary action and may lose certain privileges in accordance with departmental procedures. The search operation is continuing, as the National Commissioner intensifies efforts to maintain safety, security and discipline within correctional facilities. @DCS_ZA

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Nakedi Kekana, has commended SAPS following the arrest of police officers attached to Polokwane International Airport on Monday, 19 October 2026. The officers were arrested by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, assisted by the Tactical Response Team, for allegedly defeating the administration of justice and contravening the Immigration Act. MEC Kekana warned that no one is above the law, including law enforcement officers, and called for further arrests. The MEC said the arrests would not affect airport operations, as the officers had already been replaced and services were continuing normally. She reiterated that corruption within law enforcement would not be tolerated and pledged continued support for officers committed to fighting crime in Limpopo.

THREE ARRESTED AFTER R12-MILLION DAGGA SEIZURE IN MIDDELBURG Three suspects, aged 27 to 33, have been arrested following the seizure of 1,680kg of dagga worth an estimated R12-million on the N4 near Vandyksdrift, Mpumalanga. SAPS members stopped a speeding Isuzu truck on Monday, 19 October, and discovered 55 bags of compressed dagga hidden under a green tent. Two men who arrived in a VW Polo allegedly attempted to bribe police officers with R12,590, later increasing the offer by another R10,000 to secure the release of the drugs and the truck driver. They were arrested for alleged bribery and possession of dagga. The 55 bags, each reportedly marked with names and destinations, were seized. All three suspects are expected to appear in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court. Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise praised the officers for refusing the alleged bribe and standing firm against corruption.

HIJACKING SYNDICATE TARGETED IN ALEXANDRA -TWO ARRESTED An intelligence-driven operation in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, resulted in the arrest of two suspects believed to be linked to a vehicle hijacking syndicate operating in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. The multi-agency operation involved the SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations and Tracker Connect. Police recovered a hijacked blue Peugeot, a firearm, false registration plates, multiple car keys, gloves and cellphones believed to be linked to hijacking incidents. Some of the suspects are reportedly believed to be on parole. Investigations are continuing to establish links to other crimes and dismantle the suspected syndicate.

Two Men Shot After Drug Purchase: Waterloo – KZN Two (2) men, aged 37 and 26, were shot on a pathway next to a scrapyard on the M27 near Waterloo – KZN this afternoon (Tuesday 20/10/2026). Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at approximately 17:36 after a passerby discovered both men bleeding. Reaction Officers and RUSA Paramedics were immediately dispatched to the scene. On arrival, the 37-year-old was found with gunshot wounds to his right leg and buttocks, while the 26-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg. The injured men stated that they supplied scrap metal to the scrapyard and received heroin as payment. They proceeded to a pathway next to the business, where they were consuming the narcotics when the alleged drug dealer approached with a second man. The suspect allegedly opened fire on both men without warning before fleeing. Officers from the Verulam SAPS in KZN who were passing the scene also stopped to assist. RUSA Paramedics stabilised both men before they were transported to hospital. The whereabouts of the suspect remain unknown.
