After the game, Williams put a hand on my shoulder and said: "Connie, today was my day." And I told him: "What do you mean? Every day is your day, pal." Connie Marrero, at age 100, MLB All-Star. Another game, Connie asked Ted Williams to sign a ball that Marrero had earlier fanned him with. Williams grudgingly did. Same day, Williams crushed a Marrero curve into the grandstands and as he was rounding 3rd yelled to Connie: "Why don’t you see if you can find that one and I’ll sign IT for you, too!"

"I went to Marine Corps bootcamp at Parris Island, then infantry training at Camp Lejeune. I was an infantry rifleman, or what was called an MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). I knew where I was going, and from there I soon got my orders to go to Vietnam. I went to bootcamp on February 10, 1966, and was in Vietnam by the middle of July. I did a 13-month tour over there. I heard this thing explode and could feel the shock hit me. It lifted me up in the air eight to ten feet. The first thing I could remember thinking was: "Damn, I’ve stepped on a landmine." I wasn’t too worried because I could tell immediately it didn’t hit me anyplace where it could kill me. It was one of those quick things when everything rushes through your mind at once. Then I thought: "What if I should come down on another one?" Vietnam War veteran who served in the USMC as a radio operator and infantry platoon commander for the full 13 month tour in 1966 and 1967. Chuck Goggin was awarded the Bronze Star, Vietnam Cross of Galantry and the Purple Heart, and was wounded after stepping on a landmind. Chuck Goggin was the most decorated Vietnam War veteran to play in major league baseball. "It was a big game because Roberto Clemente was playing right field, and he had 2,999 hits. And I had zero hits. But my first time up I got a hit off Jon Matlack. The Mets rightfielder came in and got it on one hop and threw it in to second base. This was before the time of all the high-tech stuff, but we had a Jumbotron screen up there. At that moment, they put up a caricature of my face along with the message: "That was Chuck Goggin’s first major-league hit!" Doug Harvey was umping at second and he saw it. He said: "Time out! Let me see that ball." He got the ball and flipped it to me, saying: "I thought you might like this." I thanked him very much, and I still have the ball." Roberto Clemente got his 3,000th and last hit in the same game!

"Filmed three days ago at Eastside Animal Services in Tucson, Arizona. The woman is Nina. She's 38 years old. Works as a pharmacy technician. The dog is a tan mixed-breed named Copper. Six years old. She found Copper on the third call. The shelter coordinator brought Copper into the hallway where Nina was waiting. Copper stopped at the end of the hallway and went completely still. Just looked at Nina. Four seconds. Five seconds. Not moving. Then he ran. He hit Nina at full speed and she went back against the wall and they both slid down to the floor. Nina couldn't speak. She just held him. Copper had his face buried in her neck and his whole body was shaking. The staff member filming stepped back and didn't say anything. Nina sat on that floor for a long time. Eventually she looked up and said: "He remembered. After fourteen months, he still remembered me." The intake coordinator later pulled Copper's file. The scrambled eggs note was still there. The ceiling fan note was still there. She said: "We read those notes to every volunteer who walked his kennel. Everyone knew those things about him. Nina made sure of that even when she had to leave him." Copper went home that afternoon. He slept the entire car ride with his head in Nina's lap. Sometimes the pause before the run is the most honest moment. It's the one second where a heart makes absolutely sure before it lets itself believe.

Rocky stayed right there until Marcus fell back asleep. Now Rocky does this automatically every single night. Marcus showed the night vision footage to his counselor. She said: “That’s exactly the deep pressure therapy we teach service dogs. Rocky’s doing it instinctively. That’s a $25,000 behavior he was born knowing.” Rocky failed police training. But he’s saving Marcus’s life every night. Sometimes the ones who don’t make the cut are exactly who we need.
