This is only the latest in a series of revelations closely linking Israel to drug cartels, military juntas, and death squads throughout Latin America's history, as well as to the plundering of common resources and to systems of surveillance and repression.

Federal prosecutors in Minnesota have announced criminal charges against 15 people in connection with anti-ICE protests in the Twin Cities. The defendants are accused of “conspiracy to impede or injure federal officers” and of allegedly “violently” impeding immigration enforcement in Minneapolis during Trump’s so-called Operation Metro Surge, during which thousands of federal immigration agents were deployed and fatally shot two U.S. citizens. The indictment focuses on Direct Action Minnesota, a broad activist coalition that prosecutors have linked to anti-fascist, or “antifa,” groups. Textbooks teach us that Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation “freed the slaves” in 1863. But a decree alone freed no one. What ended slavery in the South was a powerful movement. During the Civil War, enslaved people waged what W.E.B. DuBois called a general strike; paralyzing the Confederate economy by abandoning plantations en masse. Hundreds of thousands of Black soldiers joined the Union Army to fight for the freedom of all Black people. Today, as we prepare to celebrate 161 years since the abolition of slavery on June 19, Black communities are still terrorized by police violence and disproportionately deprived of decent housing, healthcare, education, and jobs in a capitalist system that turns basic necessities into commodities to flip for profits. The racist spirit of the Confederacy is still alive and has found a home in the Trump administration, which is accelerating attacks against Black civil rights: eliminating DEI programs eliminated by executive order, purging Black workers from federal jobs, shutting down civil rights investigations. In the wake of the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act, Republican-led states from Texas to Louisiana to Alabama are racing to dismantle majority-Black districts — an attempt to roll back a century of social progress. To end the war on Black America once and for all, we must end the rule of the billionaires. Ever since the days of slavery, the elites in this country have profited off the backs of Black people. They have also seen Black peoples’ social movements as a threat to their power. That is why the abolitionist and Civil Rights movements were met with such resistance, and why the gains of those movements are constantly under attack by the racist elite. Today, let us remember that no one freed the slaves but themselves –– and in our continued movement for Black liberation, understand that no one will hand it to us. It must be fought for. To become rich from curing cancer, you have to withhold the cure from people suffering and dying from cancer. So yes, you don't deserve to get rich from curing cancer. Only in an exploitative and unethical system is this seen as acceptable.

The word "freedom" has been doing enormous political labor in America for a very long time and it is exhausted. Freedom from what? Freedom for whom? Freedom to drop napalm on civilians and call it "liberation"? Freedom to overthrow a democratically elected government and call it "stability"? Freedom to run a global network of military bases in every region on earth and call it "defense"? These are not perversions of the word. This is the word as it has functioned in American political life for generations. And the citizens who use it genuinely believe in it. That is the important part. They are not lying when they say it. They have been given a version of "freedom" that is entirely compatible with empire because it was designed that way. Freedom that begins at their border and ends there. Freedom that applies to them and is delivered to others by force, whether the others requested it or not. Freedom as the brand name on the product. Not as a description of the thing inside the box.

I am horrified by last night's act of terrorism against Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez, who is running for Congress as an independent socialist. The devices were exploded outside his residence when his three children were asleep indoors. The political establishment and the right wing are threatened by independent socialist candidates like Byron, who is calling for an end to funding for the Israeli state's genocide in Gaza, to abolish ICE, for universal public healthcare, and for taxes on billionaires to fund green jobs. Working people and socialists must stand in solidarity against such acts of terror. @ByronSigcho @BSLForCongress

We inherited a planet of trees that breathe for us, water that flows freely, food that grows straight from the earth, and animals that ask for nothing in return… how did we mess up so badly that we ended up with capitalism, credit scores, and wars?

A series of US airstrikes have killed 175 people in Nigeria. While the US military’s AFRICOM stated that 175 “terrorists” had been eliminated over the course of three days of bombing, locals state that dozens of civilians were killed, and countless more injured. Hospitals in Borno state were overrun with emergency cases. The Nigerian government has been at war with Islamist rebels since 2009. Nigeria is just one of seven countries the second Trump administration has bombed.
