One little-known part of the "rent vs buy" debates is when you talk about "renting and investing the difference," the vast majority of people do not understand what that means They do not realize that if you rented for half the price of owning, "investing the difference" means you would log into your 401(k) account and increase your contribution by $1,000 They do not understand the connection between these things at all, so when you say "rent and invest the difference," it sounds like jargon -- and therefore, their responses are incredulous, even though the math is often very obvious

"At what income level does flying first class become reasonable?" If I had to pick an income for first-class flight, I'd say $750,000 Here's what it depends on: - How often & far you fly (if only once/year domestically, you can do it with far less income) - Your housing and vehicle costs: These are the two biggest for most people, and if you have cheap housing at $750K, you can easily do this - Age: If you're 25 earning $750K, not necessarily a smart move. At 45 with millions in the bank, you can easily do it, likely with less income Here's how I think about it. I created a Money Rule that "any flight over 4 hours = business class." Below are some of my other Money Rules. Yours will be different than mine!
