The Vasa was a Swedish warship that unfortunately sank just about 20 minutes into its first voyage in 1628. It holds the unique status of being the only 17th-century ship completely recovered in its original form. Sweden's King Gustavus Adolphus had commissioned the construction of the Vasa, as part of his military expansion plans. The ship was constructed in Stockholm's navy yard between 1626 and 1627. However, on its maiden voyage on August 10, 1628, it sank after encountering two strong gusts of wind.x It was later discovered that the ship's construction was not symmetrical. Researchers found four different rulers used by the shipbuilders. Two of them used Swedish feet, which was 12 inches, while the other two used Amsterdam feet, which was only 11 inches. Fred Hocker, an archaeologist at the Vasa Museum, explained, "When someone instructs to make something four inches thick, one builder's four inches might not be the same as the next builder's. This can be seen in the variations in the timbers." When the ship was brought up from the sea in 1961, marine archaeologists found 15 human remains and a treasure trove of artifacts like coins, cutlery, cannons, clothing, food, drinks, and weapons.

15 years ago, I helped design Google Maps. I still use it everyday. Last week, the team dramatically changed the map’s visual design. I don’t love it. It feels colder, less accurate and less human. But more importantly, they missed a key opportunity to simplify and scale. ––– Google Maps has started to widely roll out updated map colors: - All roads are now gray - Water changed from blue to teal - Parks and open spaces are now mint green It seems the goal was to improve usability and make the maps more readable. Admittedly, I do think major roads, traffic, and trails stand out more now. But the colors of water and parks/open spaces blend together. And to me, the palette feels colder and more computer generated. But color choices aside… If the goal was better usability, the team missed a big opportunity: Google Maps should have cleaned up the crud overlaying the map. ––– So much stuff has accumulated on top of the map. Currently there are ~11 different elements obscuring it: - Search box - 8 pills overlayed in 4 rows - A peeking card for “latest in the area” - A bottom nav bar (Personally, I would LOVE to see usage metrics for all these overlays.) The map should be sacred real estate. Only things that are highly useful to many people should obscure it. There should be a very limited number of features that can cover the map view. And there are multiple ways to add new features without overlaying them directly on the map. ––– Here’s how it could look: - Keep the search box - Keep the bottom bar - Remove everything else from the map - Roll the most used features into the bottom bar - Bury the less used features elsewhere in the app I assume the search box and directions are top priority and should remain prominent. My Location and map layers (satellite, traffic, etc.) could move to the bottom bar. The explore overlays (restaurants, gas, etc.) could live in the bottom bar in “Explore” and open as cards. The additional space in the bottom bar could be used for Saved, as a “More” option, or could be removed entirely. There are many variations of how features could be arranged. But the key points are: - Dramatically simplify - Strongly prioritize map visibility - Bury legacy and low use features ––– It’s normal for products to accumulate features over time. But it’s also super important to stay vigilant and continually clean them up. In many ways, it’s interesting to see history repeating itself. In 2007, I was 1 of 2 designers on Google Maps. At that time, Maps had already become a cluttered mess. We were wedging new features into any space we could find in the UI. The user experience was suffering and the product was growing increasingly complicated. We had to rethink the app to be simple and scale for the future. En Vancouver hay un rascacielos más alto por dentro que por fuera. No es una maldición ni una aberración cuántica. Es una anomalía LINGÜISTICA, y se explica en la película "Arrival". Esta es la historia: En 2015, los bomberos de Vancouver ejecutaron un simulacro en el rascacielos de viviendas QuayWest I. El equipo interior subía por las escaleras del edificio para encontrarse con el equipo exterior, que iba una plataforma extensible. El encuentro debía producirse en la planta 32. Cuando los bomberos del interior llegaron a la planta marcada con el 32, se encontraron con que el equipo exterior estaba 4 plantas más arriba. Y sin embargo, ambos estaban técnicamente en la planta 32. ¿Dónde estaban esas cuatro plantas? Parte de la culpa de la desaparición de esas plantas la tiene la triscaidecafobia: el miedo al número 13. Porque ese miedo hace que MUCHOS edificios por todo el mundo NO TENGAN PLANTA 13. Como se ve en este ascensor de 1932, de la planta 12 pasa a la planta 14. Es una rareza total. No es que la planta 13 no exista, claro, es que la han cambiado de nombre. A veces lo sustituyen por un 12A o la letra M (la decimotercera del alfabeto). Pero esta superstición solo explicaría que en el rascacielos de Vancouver faltase UNA planta, no CUATRO. Aquí es donde llegamos a la anomalía lingüística. Si habéis visto "Arrival", recordaréis que la peli se articula sobre la hipótesis Sapir-Whorf, que establece el denominado principio de relatividad lingüística; es decir, que nuestra comprensión y conceptualización de la realidad está determinada por el lenguaje. La hipótesis Sapir-Whorf, vigente en su categorización débil, dice que "la lengua de un hablante tiene cierta influencia en la forma que este conceptualiza la realidad". Esta "cierta influencia" nos lleva a China y a los lenguajes cuya escritura se basa en el ideograma. En mandarín, donde "persona" se escribe con un carácter que parece un ser humano (人), y en el que el carácter de "prisionero" simula a esa silueta encerrada en una jaula (囚), la relación entre el lenguaje y la realidad es sensiblemente más directa. Así, en chino, el número 4 se pronuncia /sì/, algo muy parecido al sonido /sǐ/, que es el sonido de la palabra "muerte". Aunque los ideogramas son muy distintos (四 es cuatro y 死 es muerte), la identificación sonora es prácticamente idéntica. Como la relación lenguaje-significante es más directa, para un chino, el sonido "muerte" significa más muerte que para un occidental. Y como "cuatro" suena igual que "muerte", es frecuente que en los edificios de extremo oriente, se elimine toda referencia a la planta cuatro, pero también a la 14, la 24, la 34 y cualquier número terminado en cuatro. Que es exactamente lo que le sucede al rascacielos QuayWest I, que tiene esta FRIKADA de panel de ascensor donde faltan 5 plantas. Pero si este miedo al 4 es una cosa de Extremo Oriente, ¿por qué pasa en Vancouver? Porque, sencillamente, Vancouver es una de las ciudades con la comunidad oriental más numerosa de Occidente. Y, de hecho, el arquitecto del QuayWest es un hombre de ascendencia china llamado James Cheng.

My notes from Poor Charlie's Almanack: The Wit and Wisdom of Charlie Munger turned into maxims: 1. Find a simple idea and take it seriously.  2. Good ideas are rare. When you find one bet heavily.  3. Humans have been writing down their best ideas for 5,000 years. Read them. 4. Avoiding stupid mistakes is more important than being smart. 5. Don’t work with anyone you don’t admire. 6. Don’t sell anything you wouldn’t buy. 7. Avoiding a bad habit is easier than breaking a bad habit. 8. Work on your best idea. Don't diversify 9. Incentives rule everything around you. Look for them.  10. Great businesses are built by going ridiculously far in maximizing or minimizing one or a few things. Think Costco.  11. I’ve lost all patience with the gaslighting about shoplifting—it’s just 1% of revenue, it doesn’t hurt anyone but rich investors, blah blah blah. Using numbers from Lowe's 2022 10-K, here's a quick analysis showing how destructive it really is, including killing 1,500+ jobs. 👇 (1) For retail chains, 1% of revenue is an absolutely massive number. In the case of Lowe’s, inventory shrinkage—most of which is consumer shoplifting or employee theft—cost the company $997M in 2022. That’s right: One company lost nearly a billion dollars from theft. In one year. If that $1B were the revenue of a company in its own right, it would be large enough to be publicly traded. And, again, this is just Lowe’s. Think of the scale if you added in Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and all the grocery stores and drug stores across the country. Imagine how many billions of dollars that must be. All of a sudden, 1% doesn’t seem that trivial anymore, does it? (2) Even if you still believe that 1% of revenue isn’t that big a deal, let’s look at it in terms of earnings. In 2022, Lowe’s generated $11.9B in EBITDA and $6.4B in net income. That $1B in shrinkage represents 8.4% and 15.5% of those numbers, respectively. In other words, for every $6.50 in earnings for Lowe’s shareholders, they’re losing roughly $1.00 due to theft. If Lowe’s were able to eliminate all shrinkage, EBITDA would grow more than 8%, and net income would grow 11%. The company would generate an extra $710M in earnings, all without having other sell a single extra item or grow sales by even a dollar. (3) For investors, that $710M of foregone net income is massive. In 2022, Lowe’s paid out 36.8% of net income in the form of shareholder dividends—actual cash payments to its owners, including mom-and-pop retail investors and the pension funds that represent a large portion of its shareholder base. Assuming that Lowe’s kept the same payout ratio, eliminating shrinkage would create another $261M available for dividend payments. (4) More important, though, is the earnings that Lowe’s doesn’t distribute—the cash they reinvest back into their business. In 2022, Lowe’s had $1.8B in capex, in the form of new stores, improvements to existing stores, and other strategic initiatives. This $1.8B represented 28.4% of earnings. If Lowe’s kept the same ratio and applied it to an incremental $710M in net income, that would represent an extra $202M available for capex. It costs Lowe’s about $22M to build and stock a new store, and the company has an average of 173 employees per store (inclusive of employees working in corporate-overhead positions). In other words, stolen merchandise is costing the company the opportunity to build another nine stores, which would create 1,500+ new jobs. (5) To summarize: $997M in shrinkage turns into $710M in foregone net income. This foregone net income, using 2022’s ratios, means $261M in shareholder dividends missed out on, nine stores not built, and 1,500+ jobs not created. So you really want to say that shoplifting isn’t a big deal? You really want to justify it and say that it’s a victimless crime? Go tell that to the senior citizens not getting the dividend checks that they otherwise would have received. Go to nine mid-size towns without a Lowe’s and tell them that. Go find 1,500 people looking for retail jobs and tell them that the only people getting hurt here are fat-cat shareholders. Really, go on.
