Collins Mnangagwa was recently sent to Belarus for rehabilitation after he allegedly got hooked on drugs which the family accuses Tafirenyika of plying him with, according to sources. She is also accused of plundering Collins’ money after the drugs took effect, using it to buy several houses around Harare. First lady Auxillia Mnangagwa has personally demanded her arrest, although it is unclear if detectives acted on her information this week. She has reportedly vowed to repossess several houses which Tafirenyika allegedly bought using her son’s money, and without his knowledge. There is an emerging tendency among govt agents, policy advocates, business executives and allied commentators, including figures like @gift_mugano and @Jamwanda2, to present the ongoing economic growth figures as evidence of a broad-based private sector revival. Much emphasis is being peddled on the strong revenue growth reported by large corporations. However, a drill down of the underlying drivers of these numbers reveals a far more complex and concerning structural reality. As Delta recently acknowledged in its financial report, a significant portion of its revenue growth has been driven by increased spending power originating from gold-related incomes. This is not income generated through the creation of new formal-sector jobs, rising labour productivity, or sustainable industrial expansion. Rather, it is income largely derived from artisanal and small-scale gold mining activities (Chikorokoza). From a macroeconomic perspective, this raises important structural concerns. Healthy and sustainable economic growth is typically underpinned by expanding formal employment, rising wages, increased productivity, and broad-based income growth. When aggregate demand is being driven primarily by mineral extraction incomes rather than employment-led growth, the foundations of that growth become inherently questionable. This helps explain why headline growth figures have not translated into meaningful reductions in poverty, why the informal sector continues to account for roughly 80 percent of economic activity, and why many households remain economically vulnerable despite positive macroeconomic indicators. There is a reason why most advanced economies do not rely on widespread artisanal gold mining as a primary driver of domestic demand. While many countries possess significant gold mining opportunities, they often regulate extraction carefully and prioritise sectors that generate stable employment, predictable incomes, and long-term productive capacity. Sustainable economic development is built on predictable employment-based income streams, which support consumer demand, strengthen tax revenues, facilitate access to credit, and foster the growth of a formal financial system. And an economy with a viable retail sector uses supermarkets as price discovery entities which enables economic responsiveness to monetary policy changes. And Supermarkets forms the basis of the AI structured data economy. The critical challenge for Zimbabwe is not simply to increase gold output, but to ensure that economic growth is anchored in productive sectors capable of creating formal employment opportunities. Employment-driven growth remains the most effective mechanism for reducing poverty, expanding the middle class, and building a resilient economy. Rather than celebrating gold-driven consumption as evidence of economic transformation, the focus should be on addressing the structural weaknesses that prevent growth from translating into broad-based prosperity. A stable economy is characterised by predictable behaviour among economic agents and institutions, allowing policymakers, businesses, and investors to formulate and implement economic strategies with a reasonable degree of certainty. Economic policy tools are most effective when households, firms, and markets respond in a consistent and predictable manner to incentives, regulations, and macroeconomic interventions. Stability therefore provides the foundation upon which investment, planning, credit expansion, and long-term economic growth can be built. Beyond the economic concerns, there is also the environmental cost. Anyone who has travelled through my home areas such as Shamva and Bindura can observe the extensive environmental destruction caused by artisanal gold mining. Rivers, farmland, and ecosystems have been severely damaged, often with little prospect of restoration. The long-term economic and environmental consequences of this model of growth cannot be ignored.

Zvichapera.... My favorite song from Gandanga. Reminds me of that morning in October 2004 before Tsvangirai Treason Trial. The previous night 9 of us had clandestinely been spray-painting porsh suburbs of Harare. Unfortunately the group that had gone to Borrowdale was intercepted by armed police. We heard the gun shots & knew something was wrong. That night a truckload of riot police came to UZ looking for me & others. I survived by scaling up the roof of New Hall. I decided to walk to town and escape. I think I was with Gladys Hlatshwayo who I believe had been assaulted. Along the way, we got news that Philani Zamchiya had been abducted & tried to escape by jumping off a moving truck. He had been taken to a hospital in the Avenues area. I remember seeing his lifeless body as they were moving him from an ambulance. I didn't think he wld survive. The next task was to find out what had happened to the guys who had gone to Borrowdale, at the same time had to organize the youths who were supposed to go to the treason trial. The whole CBD was teeming with riot police. Harvest House was barricaded. I was later picked by Dennis Murira. He was with Ndira and Dyke if I remember well. They were playing Mukanya and all I needed was a short nap. Fortunately the holy waters and Solomon's leaves were also available to sooth my soul that early in the morning.... Memories.

It is clear from today's judgements that term extension is illegal, what is also clear is that judiciary is lacking tenacity to tell ED 'Go go Baba'. If we are afraid to take to the streets then we also should not expect the judges to do it for us. Very uncomfortable, very dividing but we now need to call on the retired Generals, the opposition, the CDF, the teachers and you (yes iwewe) to take to the streets. To Chiwenga, don't speak at funerals, church events etc but come join the streets after all you too created this beasts. We are likely to end up with the cases being dismissed on useless technicalities.
