On 30 March 1959 under threatening skies, No 6926 Holkham Hall leaves Oakengates with the 3.48pm local from Wellington to Wolverhampton. Except for New Hadley, all the local stations on this stretch have survived and a new one, Telford Central, was opened in May 1986.

Great Eastern Railway (GER) Traffic Profile in the Early 20th Century (c. 1900–1923) - a potted profile. The Great Eastern Railway primarily served East Anglia and north-east London, with its main London terminus at Liverpool Street. It stood out as a strongly passenger-oriented railway, famous for operating one of the world’s most intensive steam-hauled suburban networks. Goods traffic provided valuable support, particularly for agricultural produce, fish from the ports, and inbound coal. The GER became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923. Route Mileage and Network Changes The GER’s network was largely mature and stable by the start of the 20th century. It operated approximately 1,191 miles of route (about 1,917 km), with a total track length reaching roughly 2,631 miles once all double tracks and sidings were included. New construction was minimal. Key developments were mainly operational and capacity-related. These included fully absorbing the Northern & Eastern Railway in 1902, along with wartime improvements between 1914 and 1918 such as doubling sections of line, adding passing loops, lengthening platforms, and creating new connections. The railway continued to dominate East Anglia, facing only limited competition from a few joint lines. Passenger Traffic Profile Passengers generated the majority of the GER’s revenue and defined its character. The railway handled well over 100 million passenger journeys annually, earning it recognition as Britain’s busiest passenger line despite its relatively compact network. Suburban commuting to and from Liverpool Street accounted for the vast bulk of this traffic, serving expanding districts in Essex and north-east London including Ilford, Chingford, Enfield, and Loughton. Liverpool Street was the undisputed focal point. By 1900, over 75,000 passengers arrived there before 10:30 a.m. on a typical weekday, supported by around 400 suburban trains and 36 main-line trains each day. Many suburban services became heavily loaded, with some trains carrying up to 1,400 people. The introduction of the famous “Jazz” services in 1920 pushed capacity even further, achieving up to 24 steam-hauled suburban trains per hour and moving more than 40,000 passengers hourly in both directions combined. Main-line and seaside routes to destinations such as Norwich, Ipswich, Cambridge, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, and Cromer added significant extra volume, especially during holiday periods. The GER also made a major contribution during the First World War by transporting nearly 10.5 million military personnel. In terms of importance, Liverpool Street dwarfed all others. The next most important locations were busy suburban junctions such as Stratford and Ilford, together with major regional centres including Norwich Thorpe, Ipswich, Cambridge, and Colchester. Goods Traffic Profile Goods traffic, while secondary to passengers in revenue, remained substantial and quite varied. Annually, the GER typically moved about 5.5 million tons of general merchandise and around 7.5 million tons of coal and minerals. East Anglian agriculture supplied important flows of grain, fruit, vegetables, mustard, and market-garden produce, much of it routed via the large Stratford Market depot. Fish traffic from ports like Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth formed another distinctive feature, alongside smaller volumes of livestock. The most significant goods facilities included: Bishopsgate Goods Depot in London — a major terminal created by converting the old passenger station in 1881. Stratford — with extensive yards connected to both the locomotive works and the market. Whitechapel coal depot. Port-related yards at Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn, Felixstowe, and Parkeston Quay (Harwich). Goods operations were carefully timed to avoid interfering with the intensive suburban passenger peaks. Overall Summary In the early 20th century, the Great Eastern Railway exemplified a passenger-led railway that achieved remarkable results through intensive use of its existing network. Its suburban services from Liverpool Street represented a high point of steam-era commuter operation, while goods traffic complemented this with a useful mix of agricultural, perishable, and mineral flows. With route mileage remaining largely unchanged, the GER concentrated on operational efficiency and capacity improvements. This model served it well until road competition increased in the 1920s. The railway offers a fascinating study of how one company successfully balanced the demands of a busy London suburban area with the quieter rural and coastal economy of East Anglia.
