Ahh man, this pulled on every heartstring. 💔🐵 I really felt for the little dude. As he’s grown older, it almost seems like he’s becoming more aware of those family bonds around him — seeing his friends cuddling with their mums and wanting that same closeness or feeling of belonging. Maybe he just wanted to be near his friend and the mother figure that was there. He definitely showed spirit though — he stood his ground. We all know Punch struggles to settle down and sleep. 🤎🐵 Watching him search for comfort is heartbreaking. Seeing him suckle on the rock wall reminds me of a baby looking for reassurance and security. 🥲💔 Many young macaques still seek comfort from their mothers, and seeing Punch without that same source of comfort is an emotional sight. His friends between the ages of 3/5 still suckle 🥲 hence why he's alone alot of the time, during sleeping periods they are with their mama's. My heart hurts for you, little man. Well... I'm going to have Punch withdrawals. 😭🐵💔 Monkey Mountain will be closed to visitors for nearly 20 days from 1st September while construction takes place to install new sunshades and make further improvements. I'm really going to miss seeing Punch's adorable face, but it's all for a good reason. These upgrades will benefit Punch and the entire troop, giving them an even better environment to enjoy. A quick fact about infant Japanese macaques. 🐵🤎 When very young macaques mount another monkey, it isn't sexual behavior. This is a normal part of their development and is commonly seen in juveniles. Young macaques learn by watching and copying older members of the troop. Mounting can be part of play, practising social and motor skills, exploring relationships, or simply copying behaviors they observe. As they mature, these behaviors can take on different social or reproductive functions, but in infants they're generally considered a normal part of growing up. It's another reminder that not every behavior should be interpreted through a human perspective. In mammals, including Japanese macaques, the umbilical cord naturally dries up and falls off within a few days after birth, leaving a normal navel (belly button). Zoo keepers closely monitor newborns, and there have never been any reports of complications, trauma from Punch's mother, or any unusual issue with his umbilical cord. Photos of Punch at just 2 days old already show the small protruding spot on his belly. He was tiny then, weighing only around 500 g at birth, with soft baby fur and the typical appearance of a newborn macaque. The spot wasn't as easy to notice when he was younger because his baby fur was much thicker. As Punch has grown, filled out, and the fur around his abdomen has become thinner, his navel has become much more visible. It isn't something new or an injury—it's simply a normal part of his anatomy that has become easier to see as he's matured. If Punch's umbilical cord hadn't healed properly after birth, it's very likely the keepers would have identified and treated the problem immediately. He was closely monitored as a newborn, and there have been no reports of any complications. This is something that has been bothering me for a while now, especially after seeing some of the comments about Punch. Some people have suggested that he is being violent or acting sexually towards others, but these behaviours are a natural part of macaque society and social development. What often gets left out of the conversation is that adult macaques have also mounted Punch. It cannot be viewed as one-sided, and I won’t allow a false narrative to be created around Punch. He is a young macaque learning and growing within his troop, and his behaviour should be understood in the proper context. 🤎🐵 I truly appreciate those who take the time to understand, or at least try to see the bigger picture. 🤎 It means a lot, especially when it comes to learning about Punch and macaque behaviour rather than judging without context. 🐵⬇️🤎

Maru’s behaviour towards Punch-kun while she is with her mum can be understood through the structure of macaque society and their matriarchal hierarchy. Young macaques learn social rules by watching the adults around them. It isn’t necessarily “bad teaching” — it is part of how they learn rank, boundaries, and social behaviours within the troop. If Maru has seen her mother assert dominance towards Punch, she may be learning and practising those same social signals. The interaction is about hierarchy and social positioning, not simply aggression for no reason. 🐵🤎 Punch is an orphaned macaque, and navigating troop life without a mother’s protection is incredibly challenging. 🐵🤎 His friends are part of their own hierarchy groups, and as Punch grows older he is beginning to experience more complex social interactions within the troop. What may look like them “turning on him” can also be part of macaque social learning, boundaries, and establishing rank.
