He was only 17 years old when he walked out with his hands raised, believing surrender would save his life. Bobby James Hutton, known as "Lil' Bobby," was the youngest founding member of the Black Panther Party. He joined because he believed Black communities deserved dignity, protection, and the right to live free from police abuse. The Panthers weren't just a protest movement. They organized free breakfast programs for children, monitored police conduct, and invested in their neighborhoods. On April 6, 1968, just two days after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, Oakland police surrounded a house where Hutton and Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver were inside. After an exchange of gunfire and hours under tear gas, Hutton removed his shirt, raised his hands, and surrendered. Witnesses said he was unarmed. Police shot and killed him moments later. No officer was convicted. Bobby Hutton never lived to finish high school or become the man he might have been. He remains the first Black Panther killed by police, a reminder of how easily Black youth have been treated as threats rather than children. He was not just a Panther. He was a teenager who deserved the chance to grow up.
