There's probably 50 different reasons why Eddie Howe felt he had to leave Newcastle. All of which would have an impact on any manager at any club. But I think one of the main reasons is that Howe flew too close to the Premier League sun and the powers that be burnt his wings. At the peak of his powers, he would have felt extreme satisfaction of the job he was doing. He had the club flying after the relegation scare. He'd have felt so ambitious and he (like the rest of us) felt like we were ready to push on and REALLY challenge the "top 6" strangle hold. Then it fell apart almost overnight. Not because Howe turned into a bad manager, but because the club was ravaged over and over again. The DOF leaves, part owners leave, chief scout leaves, another DOF leaves, young prospects sold off, top players sold off, top transfer targets missed, unknown youngsters signed, and delays on new training ground/new stadium ramble on and on. I know Howe has to take some of the blame for the clubs failings. But it's nowhere near as much as people make out. What he gave to this club should never be underestimated. He could/should have went on to finish what he started, but sadly modern football rules and broken promises seen to that. I'll miss him so much and we were lucky to have him. I hope he gets his rest and he recharges after a very tough 5 years. I hope he gets the England job, and I hope he does with them what he did for us... win a trophy. 🏆 #NUFC

I have alot of sympathy for UKRI who have to make hard funding decisions - but whether it's from them, local funds, or philanthropic and commercial efforts Jodrell Bank and The Lovell Telescope simply must be kept both operational and supported as a home for science. The strategic case is overwhelming: The Lovell Telescope is the third-largest steerable radio dish on Earth, it does space debris & satellite tracking, satellite capability inference and provides defence from GPS-spoofing all of which are now critical defence capabilities as well as significant commercial opportunities for the UK. And beyond the immediate importance of that work, e-MERLIN gives us reciprocated access to a global research base, astronomy data to power further research and perhaps most importantly continues to inspire over 130,000 visitors & 20,000 schoolchildren a year. This can't be turned off and back on in a few years if we change our minds on scientific priorities - it's a one way ticket and I am sure there's a path to avoid what would be a huge loss on many fronts.

ChatGPT has 900 million weekly users but only 5% convert to paid. 37% of consumers say none of AI's uses are helpful. 30% say they're less likely to buy a product marketed as "AI-powered." Companies are spending $600 billion on AI infrastructure this year to serve a market where 97.8% of households don't pay for the product. My Take 2.2% penetration nearly four years after ChatGPT launched. Netflix hit 25% household penetration in a similar timeframe. Spotify hit 15%. The growth is fast in percentage terms but off a base so small that doubling it still leaves you in single digits. The capex projections, the bond issuances, the IPO valuations all assume consumer adoption eventually catches up to the spending. Nearly four years in, it hasn't. The pushback I'll get is that enterprise revenue is what counts and consumer subscriptions are a sideshow. Alphabet's cloud grew 82%. Anthropic reportedly hit $4.5 billion in ARR. But a lot of that enterprise spending is funded by VC money and hyperscaler capex, which makes it circular. Consumer willingness to pay is the closest thing to a genuine market signal, and right now that signal says $20 a month from 2.2% of households. The $600 billion in spending this year is a bet that the other 97.8% eventually show up. I'm not seeing it. Hedgie🤗

One of the most recognisable images of the Second World War, the Brodie-style helmet was worn by soldiers, the Home Guard, police, fire brigades, and Air Raid Precautions (ARP) wardens. Its distinctive design was developed during the First World War and refined during the Second, and it reputedly earned the nickname Salatschüssel (“salad bowl”) from German troops, owing to its resemblance. This helmet is one of many Second World War artefacts we've discovered during our excavations at Goose Hill, as part of the @sizewellc project. During the war, this area was used for military training, including exercises preparing soldiers for D-Day. It is sobering to think that this helmet may have been lost by a man training on home soil, only days before he boarded a landing craft for Normandy. British politics is now so far down the rabbit hole that Newsnight can put Count Binface on a politics panel and seriously discuss whether he might beat Nigel Farage in a by-election and become an MP. And the mad part is not that Count Binface is being asked the questions. The mad part is that, compared with much of Westminster, he sounds no less plausible. This is where the political class has dragged us: a country so exhausted by managed decline, broken promises, donor politics and manufactured leadership contests that the man with a bin on his head is treated as part joke, part protest vote, part constitutional possibility. Satire used to mock politics from the outside. Now it has been invited onto the panel because politics has become satire manifest.
