When the family finally raised the alarm on July 15, 2008, Casey gave shifting, false stories — including claims about a fictional nanny. On December 11, 2008, Caylee’s remains were found in a wooded area not far from the Anthony family home. Evidence pointed to duct tape and the circumstances of her death, but the exact cause was never definitively established in court. Casey Anthony was charged with first-degree murder and other counts. The 2011 trial became a national media spectacle. Prosecutors argued she had killed her daughter and covered it up; the defense claimed accidental drowning and a cover-up by the family. On July 5, 2011, the jury found Casey not guilty of murder, aggravated child abuse, and manslaughter. She was convicted only of four misdemeanor counts of providing false information to law enforcement and was released shortly afterward for time served. Many people — including large parts of the public — believe the verdict failed to deliver justice for Caylee. The case left deep questions unanswered and remains one of the most debated true-crime stories in modern American history. We will never forget you, Caylee.
