Hey Guys. Just wanted to address this again. I get the "cry wolf" syndrome and the desensitization to these forecasts, especially when one doesn't pan out like last week. This one may or may not pan out either. To put it into perspective, we don't issue the enhanced risk. That comes from the Storm Prediction Center, where there are people a whole lot smarter than me studying the atmosphere. Some forecasts pan out and some don't. Meteorology is far from black and white and far from accurate street-level or zip code forecasts as apps would have you believe. I get the desensitization and that is real. But if there is a threat, there is a threat. It is up to each individual to decide what they want to do with that information. But imagine if I said nothing and we get blasted with hurricane force winds at 5am. Then everyone says "why didn't you say anything?!" Maybe another way to look at it would be...the watch for fog on bridge signs and alerts or bridge freezes first. Is that helpful to know even if the fog or ice doesn't form? There have been cases where there are days and days of severe weather risks, none pan out except for one. It only takes one.

🚨 Worst air quality I’ve measured so far at my home weather station north of Milwaukee. At 12:40 AM Thursday, my PM2.5 sensor reached 180 µg/m³, which falls into the Very Unhealthy category. The concerning part? This isn’t expected to improve much on Thursday. Smoke from Canadian wildfires will continue impacting southeastern Wisconsin on Thursday. ⚠️ Please take this seriously. • Limit time outdoors. • Keep windows and doors closed. • Run an air purifier if you have one. • If you have asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. COULD MILWAUKEE HIT 100°?! A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon Tuesday through 8 PM Wednesday. My forecast highs are 98° Tuesday and 98° Wednesday, with heat index values near 100° Tuesday and 101° Wednesday. But an actual air temperature of 100° is possible either day—especially if dew points fall into the low-to-mid 60s. Why? Drier air heats more efficiently. That’s why 100° temperatures are much more common in places like Phoenix and less common in humid Florida. If dew points stay higher, the heat index climbs, but the actual temperature is less likely to reach 100°. Milwaukee’s last 100° air temperature was August 23, 2023. Either way, this will be a dangerous stretch of heat. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity and check on anyone without reliable air conditioning. Posted: Mon. 7/13/26

We’ve now heard from both the City of Lake Geneva and the National Weather Service regarding the July 3, 2026 downburst thunderstorm that hit Walworth County, including Geneva Lake. I want to try to explain, as clearly as I can, why certain alerts did — or did not — happen that day. For a deeper radar and warning breakdown from that day, please see this video: youtu.be/qMFsFjDvJDY?si… Here is the basic timeline: 11:45 AM: A Tornado Warning was issued for southeastern Rock County for radar-indicated rotation. 11:53 AM: A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Walworth County, including Geneva Lake, for 70 mph winds. Roughly 12:18–12:30 PM: Downburst winds hit the Geneva Lake area. 12:23 PM: A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Racine and Kenosha counties for 70 mph winds. 12:28 PM: A Tornado Warning was issued just northeast of Lake Geneva into Racine and northwestern Kenosha counties for radar-indicated rotation. In simple terms: the storm was rotating in Rock County, then became more outflow-dominant in Walworth County — meaning damaging straight-line/downburst winds became the main concern — and then rotation increased again just northeast of Lake Geneva. One of the biggest questions has been about sirens and cell phone alerts. These are actually two separate systems, so let me take them one at a time. Wireless Emergency Alerts — the emergency alerts that buzz your phone — follow a national standard. They are automatically triggered for Tornado Warnings, and for only the most destructive Severe Thunderstorm Warnings: typically those with 80 mph winds or stronger and/or baseball-size hail. The Walworth County warning was for 70 mph winds. That is still extremely dangerous, especially on a lake, but it does not meet the automatic phone alert threshold for a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. Outdoor sirens are different. They are controlled locally by county and municipal emergency management, not by the National Weather Service. In this area, sirens are activated for Tornado Warnings or Severe Thunderstorm Warnings with 80 mph winds or stronger. So while it may have felt like phone alerts and sirens came too late, phone alerts went out and sirens sounded when the Tornado Warning was issued at 12:28 PM — after the most dangerous winds had already hit the Geneva Lake area. This was a fast-evolving, high-impact storm. It is also the kind of event that I believe will lead to important conversations and, hopefully, changes going forward. One personal recommendation I have, especially for boaters: do not rely on one source of weather information. Cell service can be spotty on lakes, and sirens are not designed to be heard everywhere — especially indoors or over wind, rain, and distance. A few safety tools to consider: - A battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio - A trusted weather app with alerts enabled — I’m obviously partial to our FOX6 Storm Center App, but any reliable app with warnings turned on is what matters - A portable lightning detector - A plan to get off the water quickly when storms are nearby These are general examples, not endorsements. Many lessons will be learned from this event about how to reduce the risk of future tragedies. Everyone involved — from the warnings issued by the National Weather Service to the heroic efforts of first responders — was dealing with an incredibly difficult situation. 10:05pm Sun. 6/28: The heat wave starts on Monday in southeastern Wisconsin. Areas like Wind Point and Port Washington might be much cooler when the wind stays out of the south. But for the rest of us...dangerous heat. The heat index will be above 100 on Monday afternoon. This heat will last until at least Saturday. It's not just the highs, but keep in mind that nighttime lows could struggle to get below 80. So keeping cool and hydrated is the top priority. Check on pets and older neighbors and friends.
