When I first got into education, I thought every kid needed my system. The right method, applied to everyone, problem solved. Years of running a school changed that. Now I think if a family has 10 children, they might need 10 different schools. The kid is not the variable to fix.

Michael may be right, but it would make me somewhat sad. Many of the smartest, wisest, holiest, most thoughtful people I know are not the best "real-time conversationalists." They're not good at party tricks, rattling off historical facts and cracking jokes or having a quick take on every question. They might gaze off into the distance and ramble on for 10-15 minutes about something that they know is hard to articulate and they want to do justice to. This has always been my critique of the podcast format, which rewards a very specific type of rherotorical skill that isn't necessarily correlated to important things.

The teacher who reads aloud to their class every day, not as a lesson, just as a gift, is building something. Not reading skills. Not comprehension scores. A shared imagination. Hi, “certain kind of liberal” here. Always good to see people engaging on the specifics. A quick summary of my view here: People learn at different rates. It is overwhelmingly clear that some portion of this variance is genetic; I leave the specifics of what is genetic and what is early childhood to domain experts. Every time I see a successful intervention to increase someone’s rate of learning, I’m thrilled. But people learn at different rates. Like many, I was drawn to this at first because I did well on tests and was bored in school. It’s not flattering because it’s scandalous, it’s flattering because it’s nice to find something you’re good at! But over time, I became obsessed with a disconnect: People learn at different rates. But virtually every time politicians talk about school, and every time you look at what’s happening in education policy, you see flat baselines. What percent are “proficient” or “at grade level”? Below a flat line? Crisis. Above it? Privileged; no concern. Everyone knows kids learn at different rates. And for generations, education policy has been obsessed with burying that, centered around a goal of flattening learning rates. This has distorted research, it has distorted policy, and it harms countless kids in countless schools every day. Because—forget about anything to do with genetics, and just test kids. Is someone ready for algebra? Teach algebra. Are they ready for novels? Give them novels. Do they need basic phonics practice? Give basic phonics practice. Are they struggling with addition? Teach addition. Some kids will progress faster. Some will progress slower. The question is not “are they going at the same speed?” but “are they being challenged appropriately? are they being productively taught to their level?” I would love to shut up about ability differences. But the trouble is, I’m not wrong on the facts. The people who work to flatten education into a one-size-fits-all mess because they refuse to say kids learn at different rates are, and until liberals get serious about it, they will continue to pursue intellectually bankrupt policies that hurt the kids they claim to help, at all levels.

I’m learning that getting older means graduating from main character to supporting cast. From child, student, suitor to parent, teacher, spouse. You grow ever more deeply invested in other people’s successes, if you’re doing it right, and realizing what a privilege that is. You come to see and feel that the richer and deeper your own life becomes, the less you want to be the center of attention, the more you understand that the money spot of the human soul is in the cheering section, where the self is lost in love. I think this carries on forever, by the way.

I’m not anti-AI. I like MRI machines. I like collision avoidance systems in airplanes. I like software that can detect cancer before a doctor can. I like machine vision systems that stop factory workers from getting their hands crushed in hydraulic presses. That’s what computers are supposed to do. Cold. Precise. Mechanical. I don’t need a technology to “express itself.” The problem started when Silicon Valley decided the machine should paint. The machine should write poetry. The machine should compose symphonies and generate films and imitate the human soul like a skinwalker wearing a beret. Now every ad, every song, every image online has this faint chemical aftertaste to it. Like the entire culture is being slowly replaced with synthetic substitutes because executives realized audiences consume slop at the same rate they consume art. And the worst part is they call this “democratizing creativity.” No. Creativity was already democratized. A guy with a guitar and 3 friends in a garage could make something beautiful. A college kid with a cracked copy of Photoshop could make an album cover that changed someone’s life. What they actually democratized was content production. Factories. Throughput. Infinite generation. A machine can diagnose my low testosterone. Fine. I just don’t want it writing the eulogy.

MOST PEOPLE SUCK AT LEISURE. leisure doesn’t mean doing nothing. it doesn't mean switching off your brain, rotting on your sofa, or doomscrolling tiktok. leisure means doing something for its own sake. something that demands your highest capacities and makes you a better human. reading philosophy. learning a craft. playing sports. having important conversations. contemplating life. making music, poetry, art. the deterioration of leisure might be the most underrated problem of our time, and society would be a much happier place if we fixed it.

7/ The psychopaths pushing age verification laws know exactly what they are doing. They are not trying to protect children. They are using children as a weapon to build the surveillance infrastructure they could never pass openly. They are counting on you caring more about sounding reasonable than protecting your kids from a system designed to control them forever.
