Paying ₹3,600 a year just to receive a bank OTP, is this really a Mobile Service or an "OTP Tax"? Today, a Mobile Number is required for almost everything important Banking UPI KYC Credit Cards Insurance Government Services 2FA / OTPs If your SIM becomes inactive, access to several essential financial and digital services can become difficult. But if someone does not need Mobile Data, already has Wi Fi at home, and uses the SIM only for OTPs, SMS and incoming calls, why should they still have to pay for expensive bundled recharge plans ? Imagine a family of 6 ₹3,600 × 6 = ₹21,600 per year. Just to keep their mobile numbers active. If people already have Wi Fi at home, why should not there be a ₹500/year basic plan that provides only essential services like incoming calls and OTP or SMS ? Telecom companies have every right to make money by selling data that’s fair. But here’s the bigger question In Digital India, should people really have to spend thousands of rupees every year just to maintain access to essential services like Banking, KYC and 2FA ? If a Mobile Number has effectively become part of our Digital Identity, should not there also be an affordable basic plan simply to keep the SIM active ? Maybe it’s time for TRAI to seriously consider this.
