It could be argued that "Masha and the Bear" is just reflecting Russian culture. What kid in the West is going to be harmed by seeing Masha wear an NKVD hat? They're not going to understand the reference. Consider, however, if Germany made a TV program for kids full of oblique references to Nazism. Would you be happy for your kids to watch it? And yes, Soviet/imperialist Russia, and today's fascist Russia, are very much akin to Nazi Germany.

The war in Ukraine has now lasted longer than the First World War. That fact is striking on its own. The First World War lasted 1,568 days. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, and has now surpassed that mark. For many Canadians, however, this is not simply a distant conflict. It is a chapter in a story that has been unfolding in Canada for more than 130 years. The first large wave of Ukrainian immigrants arrived in Canada in 1891, when settlers from western Ukraine—then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire—began arriving on the Prairies. Drawn by the promise of farmland, they helped build communities across what are now the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Life was not easy. Many arrived with little money, cleared bush by hand, endured harsh winters, and faced discrimination from Canadians who viewed Eastern Europeans as outsiders. During the First World War, thousands of Ukrainians living in Canada were classified as "enemy aliens" because they had emigrated from territories controlled by Austria-Hungary. Some were interned by the Canadian government. Yet the community endured and grew. A second wave arrived between the wars. A third wave came after the Second World War, bringing refugees, professionals, and families displaced by Soviet and Nazi occupation. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, a fourth wave strengthened ties between independent Ukraine and Canada. Today, more than 1.3 million Canadians claim Ukrainian ancestry, making Canada home to one of the largest Ukrainian diasporas in the world outside Ukraine itself. That history helps explain why events in Eastern Europe resonate so deeply here. When Canadians watch the war unfold today, many are not simply observing a foreign conflict. They are following the story of grandparents who homesteaded on the Prairies, families who fled totalitarian regimes, and communities that spent generations preserving a language, culture, and identity thousands of kilometres from their ancestral homeland. The war may now have lasted longer than the First World War. But the connection between Canada and Ukraine has lasted far longer still. In an ominous development, a Russian “Molniya” strike UAV was equipped with only a camera and a computing module, without any means of radio communication. Such full autonomy with terrain-following capability had previously been observed only on the “V2U” UAV.

If Reuters’ reporting is accurate, the bigger story isn’t the 200,000 barrels of jet fuel, it’s what the route tells us. Japan ➡️ South Korea ➡️ ship-to-ship transfer ➡️ Russia. For years, we’ve been told sanctions would isolate Russia. Yet if traders and intermediaries continue finding ways to profit from supplying a country waging the largest war in Europe since 1945, we have to ask: does money still trump principle? Sanctions are only as effective as the willingness to enforce them. There is every indication the governments involved may not be aware of the final destination of the cargo. If that is the case, the question is whether authorities will investigate and act if sanctions or export controls have been circumvented.

Dear Catholics, if we're being completely honest with ourselves, we'll admit that the Novus Ordo Mass was never meant to be irreverent. It was meant to be celebrated with silence, deep reverence, kneeling, bowed heads, and profound adoration of Our Lord. If you're not seeing that in your parish, the problem is not the Novus Ordo itself. The problem is how it is being celebrated in some places. For those who constantly criticize the Novus Ordo, look at how Mass is celebrated in the Vatican. Is it noisy? Is it filled with distractions? No. Look at many other reverent Novus Ordo parishes around the world. You'll find silence, prayer, and deep respect for the Sacred Liturgy. One of the things I personally love about attending Mass is the silence. When I walk into a church before Mass, I want to be able to pray. That atmosphere of reverence is exactly what the Church intends. This isn't a problem with Vatican II. Vatican II never called for the liturgy to become casual or entertainment-driven. The Novus Ordo envisioned by the Church is one of reverence, dignity, and worship. If you remember, Pope Leo reminded priests not to add to or subtract from the Mass. That is precisely where many of the problems have come from—not from the Church, but from individuals who have introduced practices that were never intended. In some places, people perform dramas in the church, organize activities in front of the altar, or introduce other distractions that have nothing to do with the Sacred Liturgy. These things were never mandated by Vatican II. Don't blame the Church for abuses the Church itself does not permit. I've seen the opposite happen. In one of my former parishes, a new priest arrived and removed many of these unnecessary additions. At first, some parishioners complained because they had become used to them. But over time, they came to appreciate the renewed sense of reverence and began valuing the sacredness of the Mass even more. That's the point. The Novus Ordo Mass, as the Church intends it, is meant to be celebrated with reverence, silence, and adoration. If we have allowed secularism or unnecessary innovations to creep into our parishes, then it's time to correct them, not by rejecting the Mass itself, but by celebrating it as the Church intended. This should be a call for all of us -priests and laity alike- to return to a deeper sense of reverence before Christ in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Poland is spending 10s of billions of Euros per year building up its military for a future conflict with Russia. It makes financial and overall strategic sense for Warsaw to spend a few of those billions yearly in degrading the Russian military and pushing back the timeline for any future conflict. These political issues (and I won’t get into the blame) are not insurmountable and quite frankly in my view are being artificially inflated. Stay focused.

🔴 UPD: The death toll in Kyiv rises to 18, according to the State Emergency Service. The Russian attack on the capital overnight targeted residential areas, apartment blocks and civilian infrastructure.

Russian channels released footage of them using tear gas to flush out Ukrainian fighters from dugouts and kill them. The use of tear gas in military conflict is a war crime, though this has not stopped them before, as there are few ramifications for them. So they will continue.
