Here’s every career path I tried and why I pivoted: - mathematics instructor I was a math tutor in 2012-2014. I wanted to be a math professor. I looked at the salaries between data scientists and math professors and decided I didn’t want to be poor. - mobile developer I was a mobile developer from 2013-2015. I did many Android contracts and had my own application that had 50,000 monthly active users. I got rejected twice from Google to be a mobile dev so I decided I wasn’t good at it. - data analyst I worked as a data analyst in 2014. I did a lot of Tableau work while I moonlit doing Android dev. I ultimately decided this role didn’t make enough money to continue down this path pivoted into data engineering. - data engineer I worked on and off as a data engineer between 2015 and 2023. I found the mix of building and analytics to really hit a sweet spot in my brain. SQL occasionally got extremely boring though. I left data engineering in 2023 to be a content creator and entrepreneur - entrepreneur / creator I’ve been a creator since December 2020. I found the community building to be addictive and exciting. I jumped in full time in March 2023. It’s been a wild ride since then and I’m excited to see where it goes by end of 2025! One lesson here is, WORK MULTIPLE JOBS at the same time. I was a creator and a data engineer. I was a mobile dev and a data analyst. I’ve almost always worked two jobs simultaneously throughout my entire career!
