🚨 BREAKING: Massive explosion rocks Essex industrial unit – embers now spreading the fire! This afternoon (24 July 2026) a huge blast tore through an industrial unit/warehouse on Southend Road between East Hanningfield and Rettendon (Highlands Farm area). Locals said it sounded “like a bomb.” A fire first ripped through a barn containing fertiliser and gas bottles, triggering the enormous explosion. Thick black smoke is visible for miles, and flying embers are now setting homes, farmland and vehicles alight. More than 100 firefighters and specialist teams are on scene battling a major incident across multiple buildings. Nearby roads are closed and residents have been told to stay away and keep windows and doors shut because of the heavy smoke. No injuries reported so far. Cause still under investigation. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service have released a statement regarding the serious incident yesterday evening at Highlands Farm. A significant fire, with a number of firefighters welfare and wellbeing a concern for both the fire service and for the union. The union will continue to support members involved in the incident and the subsequent investigation. Fire Brigades Union General Secretary Steve Wright said: “The Fire Brigades Union is aware of a significant fire attended by Essex Fire and Rescue Service in which a number of firefighters have been injured while carrying out their duties. “Our thoughts are with the injured firefighters, their families, friends and colleagues at this difficult time. We are in contact with local FBU representatives and Essex Fire and Rescue Service to establish the full circumstances of the incident. “The Fire Brigades Union will ensure our members receive all the support they need and will provide whatever assistance is required in the coming days. Iranian National Charged With Stabbing Young Woman To Death & Attempting To Murder Toddler In Surrey. In another episode of diversity is our strength, an Iranian national with a British passport has been charged with the brutal murder of a 27-year-old woman and the attempted murder of her two-year-old baby in Surrey. Milad Ghafari, 35, of Woodthorpe Road, Ashford, was charged this week with murder, attempted murder and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent after the horror at Imtech House on 16 January 2025. The victim, Laleh Zarejouneghani, was pronounced dead at the scene from a single fatal stab wound to the neck. The toddler suffered very serious injuries, was taken to hospital and later discharged. Imtech House is a former office block converted into one-bedroom flats and used as temporary accommodation for homeless families. Local residents have complained for years about anti-social behaviour, litter, noise and the extra strain on local services. At 1.15pm that Thursday, officers were dispatched to a concern-for-safety call and found the woman and child with catastrophic injuries inside the property. Ghafari, who lived at the same address and was known to the victims, was arrested the same day. He was initially charged only with child cruelty and remanded in custody while the murder investigation continued for more than 18 months. He was due to appear at Guildford Magistrates Court on 23 July. No further updates on the outcome of that hearing have been reported. The child who survived is now being cared for. Teenage Girl Raped Near Mosque In Keighley, Bradford. A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a teenage girl late at night near the Shahjalal Jami Masjid in Keighley, Bradford. The offence took place on Thursday night on Temple Row, a short and narrow 88-metre stretch of road between Russell Street and Temple Street. The street is almost entirely taken up by the large Grade II-listed former Methodist chapel, now the Shahjalal Jami Masjid. Inspector John Barker of the Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "We appreciate that an offence of this nature will cause concern in the local community. I can reassure people that this report is being treated with the utmost priority and that we are supporting this with an additional neighbourhood policing presence in the area." The 28-year-old suspect remains in custody while inquiries continue. No further details about the man or the precise circumstances of the attack have been released.
