Most AI coding tools look great in a demo. But on production codebases, they struggle. If you code with AI, read this: Why do a lot of AI coding tools struggle with larger codebases? Context. A CRUD app is one thing. Layered architecture, domain logic, tests, queries, permissions? Completely different story. The AI dev tooling landscape is improving with context, but there’s still a long journey ahead. One tool that does especially well at understanding large codebases is Augment Code. How? Their context engine. They’ve done things differently to specialize with production-grade codebases. And that deeper understanding of your codebase leads to: ↳ Better context ↳ Better agents ↳ Better code Their agent mode does a great job of making large changes to your codebase. And now they’ve just released a Tasklist feature which helps the agent create and refine a step-by-step plan for you to review. I’ve found the way a problem or tasks are presented to an agent significantly affects outcomes. I think workflows like being able to ask the agent to create a Tasklist based on Jira tickets. Or break down complex tickets into manageable steps is a great workflow win for devs, and also improves the effectiveness of the agent.
