They form in the extreme environment around a black hole, where an accretion disk feeds matter inward and generates enormous amounts of heat and magnetic energy. Strong, organized magnetic fields thread the inner accretion flow and can help launch and collimate plasma into two narrow jets along the system’s rotation axis. The plasma can be accelerated to speeds very close to the speed of light.
