This is a woman is trying to collect water near Tenwek, Kenya (shared with permission). It is rainy season. There is water everywhere... and yet the water she is gathering is contaminated. The only water available is not safe to drink. Without rainwater catchment infrastructure, the villagers are forced to rely on the rivers and streams. The available rain that falls on rooftops and hillsides just runs off. Drinkable water becomes waste. Daily, women and children still walk kilometers to streams. Still carry heavy containers up steep terrain. Still drink contaminated water. And sometimes, like this, they fall. The women in this village are in pain. The trek is dangerous and injuries are common. This is not a water scarcity problem. There is plenty of water. This is an infrastructure problem. A governance problem. An investment problem. Through the Kenya Water Support Network, our team has installed rainwater catchment systems that have sustained for three years in communities just like this one. The solution exists. The gap is reach. The insecurity and escalating violence in El Obeid, North Kordofan, #Sudan, are having a severe impact on people’s access for humanitarian aid and to life-saving services. This increases the risk of disease outbreaks and malnutrition, especially for women and children. @WHO has prepositioned essential medical supplies for trauma and injury care, communicable disease prevention and response, reproductive, maternal and child health, and nutrition, enough to treat over 25,500 people. But the needs are large and growing. WHO calls for the immediate restoration of humanitarian corridors to ensure the safe and sustained delivery of health and humanitarian assistance. We also call for respect for the sanctity of health and the protection of health workers and patients.

This weekend the first cross-border surveillance meeting was held between #Ebola rapid response teams in Aru in #DRC 🇨🇩 and Arua in #Uganda 🇺🇬. The discussion was convened and moderated by @WHO, with participation from @AFENETAfrica. The teams designed a strategy to share Ebola case investigation findings, alerts and information on contacts of cases that will strengthen cross-border surveillance and inform joint response actions across the neighbouring countries.

Today @MinofHealthUG and @MinSanteRDC met in Aru health zone, #DRC 🇨🇩 to launch a cross-border collaboration to strengthen surveillance for border areas, and establish joint laboratories and clinical services in several locations across DRC, starting with Aru. The plan includes shared surveillance and information at points of entry, and joint deployment of rapid response mobile laboratories, Ebola treatment centres and expert teams to work together to stop the outbreak.
