A reminder that MediAsas isn’t a “government” health insurance program; it’s a typical private MHIT product — premiums paid by policyholders, while claims are approved and paid out by private ITOs. Govt isn’t investing a sen into MediAsas. There is nothing in the law to compel ITOs to approve every single MediAsas claim because, as per above, it’s an entirely private product. Whether MediAsas covers pre-existing conditions depends on your policy contract (if and when the product is launched). As for waiting periods, even if your MediAsas policy contract states 2-4 months (like other typical products in the market), most insurers deny claims submitted within 2 years of your policy. GE16 will be held well before then. So you won’t be able to complain to the current health or finance minister about denials of MediAsas claims. If your MediAsas premiums spike in a couple of years, again, it’s not the Madani government’s problem (unless it’s re-elected in GE16). The new govt will probably just tell you to take it up with your insurer because it’s a private product. If indeed MediAsas’ annual limit is only RM100k or slightly higher — and you’re currently uninsured — then you may want to rethink buying it if you want to be protected against illnesses like cancer or a heart attack, since insurers say they’ve seen cancer claims last year exceeding RM1 million per admission. A triple-heart bypass can cost more than RM100k, according to private hospitals. But if you already have an existing good medical plan, then perhaps you can just top up with MediAsas, so that you don’t have to touch your main plan for conditions like dengue maybe. Before you spend your hard-earned money on MediAsas (if and when it’s launched), follow Bank Negara’s ABC advice: 1. Assess your needs and ask the right questions 2. Browse available options 3. Choose wisely from options provided
