It's a good question. I'd always considered personal/portable (but not wearable) Far-UVC just a stepping stone to institutional/infrastructure based Far-UVC. The equivalent of carrying a LifeStraw around because restaurants got their water from the local stream. A necessary bridge technology until Far-UVC could be implemented at scale. There's some new data that is making me question that. Far-UVC effectiveness is largely driven by power output and diffusion. The reason Far-UVC companies refuse to provide this data from a third-party source is that it would make Far-UVC a commodity you can comparison shop for. It was a whole lot easier to mount a 100mW Far-UVC emitter on a wall and safely use it than it was to carry 100mW around, so infrastructure was, by definition, going to be more effective than portable/personal applications. There seems to be an emerging caveat to that. There's almost no innovation in Far-UVC; it's basically become a financial instrument for the large players, and that means that Path Dependence has become a bit of an issue- think railroad gauges being traceable back to wagon wheel spacing, even if that makes for a less-than-optimal train. Infrastructure-based Far-UVC has a ton of these issues- for the most part, it's not really designed with an understanding of Far-UVC as an IAQ tool. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_depe… This means that the way manufacturers think about and implement Far-UVC is based on legacy thinking about GUV and IAQ- there's a lot of design baggage and really no interest in addressing it because, well, R&D is expensive and marketing is cheap. The upshot is that our latest models suggest we can achieve the same near-field transmission mitigation results as with decent infrastructure-based Far-UVC using a portable unit with about half the output wattage. That starts to put portable/personal Far-UVC in its own product category- not simply as a stopgap until/if we can get large-scale deployment of infrastructure-based Far-UVC. So an interesting shift there. As far as home versus institutional deployment, I think the first is still a tremendous tool to gain the second. It gets people comfortable; it spots problems at small scale with consenting early adopters- not employees being forced to accept an unknown technology- and it puts price pressure on manufacturers focused on institutional buyers.

This is happening to websites in every corner of the internet. Google AI Overviews may be convenient for the searcher, but this convenience comes at a cost. Sites like HouseFresh and Inspired Taste are powered by real people who spend real money and real time to create valuable content for the web. We won't be able to survive if every Tech Giant keeps training their AI with our work without compensation just to sell convenience to their users. If this continues, the information your AI of choice will offer you in a few years time is bound to be a mix of advertising, spam and old content from the days when websites were still alive.
